Notes:
- A placement test for keyboard skills will be administered at the time of the music audition for incoming students. RCM Grade VI is expected. Students who do not have RCM Grade VI will be placed in keyboard classes at Redeemer (MUS-104/105/106) based on the assessment. Students will pay an additional fee for the keyboard classes. Keyboard proficiency is expected of all music students.
- A placement test for theory is also administered at the audition. This assessment determines whether the student needs to complete MUS-110 in the first term or is exempted from the course. Students who are exempted from MUS-110 will take another 300-level MUS elective for the program.
- Students will pay an additional fee for lessons. These fees can be found on page 23 of the Academic Calendar.
Course Details
Keyboard Proficiency I MUS-104
Includes basic technique, rhythm, tone conception, articulation, fingering, pentachord patterns, sight reading, transposition, tetrachord scales, and simple I-V harmonization. RCM Grade 1 and 2 repertoire.
Keyboard Proficiency II MUS-105
Includes basic work as in MUS-104, plus pedaling and phrasing. Easier major scales, two rhythms, and arpeggios (hands separate), I-IV-V progressions and harmonization with simple accompaniments, tonic/dominant seventh by-ear chording, and Grade 1 sight reading. RCM Grade 3 and 4 repertoire.
Keyboard Proficiency III MUS-106
Includes easier major scales (hands together), two rhythms, easier arpeggios and minor scales (hands separate), major/minor primary triad patterns and harmonization, by-ear work with varied accompaniments, simple improvisation and easy hymns, and Grade 2 sight reading. RCM Grade 5 and 6 repertoire.
Basic Theory and Aural Skills MUS-110
A course designed to develop fluency and skill in the basics of music with reference to performance, theory, and ear training.
Music Theory I MUS-121
Study of basic materials of tonal music, triads, sevenths, non-harmonic tones, analysis of simple musical forms, melody writing, and four-part harmonization in the eighteenth century style.

This course will study music in various cultural contexts, employing several approaches in studying how music reflects and responds to diverse social, political, and historical contexts. Students will gain a basic understanding of music in, and as, culture as they consider the ways individuals and communities interact with music as part of culture.
Hymnology MUS-323
Study of psalmody and hymnody in history and current practice; theological study of hymn texts and musical study of hymn tunes; and practical use of hymnals in Christian worship.

Choral Music MUS-324
Study of the large-scale choral repertoire from the Renaissance to the present. Listening, score study, and analysis in the main genres of large choral works: cantatas, Masses, oratorios, passion settings, Requiems, etc.

World Musics MUS-326
Ethnomusicological study of select music cultures of the Orient, the Near East, Africa, and the Americas, with a focus on their various musical styles and the roles of music in these cultures. Field trips are required.
A Survey of Keyboard Literature MUS-328
This course covers material from Robertsbridge Fragment to the early nineteenth century keyboard repertoire. In this course students will take an in-depth look at the development of keyboard repertoire and historic keyboard instruments from the fourteenth to midnineteenth centuries (i.e. the Porative, Clavichord, Spinet, Harpsichord, Organ, Forte Piano, and Piano repertoire). Sessions on performance practice issues, student seminars, and field trips to play important instruments will be included.

Admission Requirements
The Music Performance program requires applicants to complete a music audition for proper course placement.
Applicants from Ontario will be considered for general undergraduate admission based on the following requirements:
- Successful completion of Grade 12 U English
- Five additional Grade 12 U or M level courses
- Minimum grade average of 65%
- No O-level courses or Co-op courses used

Audition information
All prospective music majors and minors are required to complete a music audition during the application process.
Below is important information to consider as you visit Redeemer for your music audition, including a description of the types of assessment we will do, as well as how you can prepare for them.
Theory Assessment
We will give you a short test that will assess your knowledge of basic theory including major and minor scales, key signatures, and intervallic relations. You will also have a basic ear training and rhythmic dictation test.
Primary Area of Study
As a music student, you will choose a primary area of study (instrumental, vocal, or piano). You will be able to elect to take lessons in another area but we require you to choose one area that you focus on to achieve an artistic level of performance. If you are unsure of your primary area, please call Dr. Christiaan Teeuwsen at 905-648-2139 ext. 4252.
Audition Preparation
Please come to your audition prepared to sing or play two pieces (preferably memorized). The two pieces should be contrasting pieces from larger movements or works (Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic periods). Please note that an accompanist will not be provided for your audition.
Piano Proficiency Level
Upon entrance to Redeemer’s music program, you must have a base level of keyboard proficiency. For students whose primary area of study is not piano, they should have at least Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM) Grade 4. If a student does not enter the program with Grade 4 RCM proficiency, they will be assigned to a keyboard class at the time of their audition. We have a sequence of 3 levels of keyboard classes to help students achieve this proficiency. Students with no piano background, for example, will be placed in level I. Please come with a piano piece to play at a level you feel very comfortable with.
For students whose primary area of study is piano, they should begin with a minimum level of Grade 8 RCM.
Ensemble
An opportunity will be available to you to audition for any of the following vocal or instrumental ensembles while you are on campus:
- Concert Choir
- Strings Ensemble
- Contemporary Music Ensemble
For some of you, your audition for the primary applied area will suffice as an audition for ensemble (e.g., a vocal audition will double as an audition for choir). We also host auditions in the first week of the fall term. Following are guidelines for your preparation for ensemble auditions.
Concert Choir
- Come prepared to sing the hymn or song of your choosing in your appropriate voice range
- Sight-read a short passage
String Ensemble and Contemporary Music Ensemble
- Come prepared to play one piece on your instrument, with or without accompaniment.
- Be able to play one major and one minor scale
- You will be asked to sight-read a short passage at your appropriate level
- If you would like to audition for contemporary music ensemble and are comfortable with improvisation then you can demonstrate that for us.
