Program Intro

How do we develop God's world with care?

banner image background banner image background

As we look at the world around us, it's alarmingly evident that humanity faces significant environmental challenges that are complex, multi-faceted, and of ever-increasing importance. Redeemer's Environmental Studies program studies nature and how humans interact with God's creation. A strong focus on philosophy, politics and geography equips students to be stewards of the earth and its natural resources, focused on contemporary environmental issues and sustainability.

Environmental Studies is a Bachelor of Arts degree program. It is offered as a major and as a minor.

Quick Links

Right from the start, small class sizes allow for meaningful class discussion, lead by professors who are actively researching in the field and excited to include students in their work.

First-year courses provide an interdisciplinary understanding of populations, cities, and resources through courses that dig into economics, geography, and science surrounding environmental issues. These foundational courses prepare you to dig into topics that are specific to your areas of interest later on in your studies.

Environmental Studies The Core

The Core Curriculum is a set of 10 courses that every student takes. The courses are woven through every major and get you to think deeply and broadly about what you’re studying. Think about it this way…

  • Scientists have a deeper sense of stewardship when they have a biblical understanding of creation care.
  • Researchers can communicate their findings more clearly when they know how to write persuasively.
  • Urban planners are able to design better communities when they understand the diverse needs of people.

In the Classroom

The social aspects of environmental issues are emphasized in your courses. Increase your understanding of environmental issues, sustainability, and environmental philosophy through courses like Environmental Impact Assessment and Resource Management, while also delving into topics around cultural geography, economics and politics, and social movements in courses like Population, Food and Sustainability.

Beyond the Classroom

On Redeemer's campus, the Whaley Teaching Garden, the natural regeneration site, rooftop greenhouse, and fully-equipped science labs allow for students and faculty to safely and professionally study different environmental issues such as ecology, zoology and toxicology.
