Humber’s Mechanical Engineering Technology is an advanced diploma program that provides you with hands-on experience and the underlying foundational knowledge required to conceive, design, manufacture and operate engineering systems. Working on projects in state-of-the-art laboratories and design spaces, you will work on finding solutions for design and manufacturing challenges in engineering systems.

The curriculum covers the theory and the skills required for:

• advanced manufacturing of engineering systems
• automation
• engineering and project management
• engineering design using leading industrial software
• operation design and sustainability
• programming computer numerical control (CNC)
• prototyping and proof of concept applications
• testing and maintenance of engineering systems

Our program builds upon the solid technical foundation of the Mechanical Engineering Technician diploma program. The manufacturing and basic design skills acquired in the first two years of the technician program are enhanced in the third year by focusing on detailed design and advanced manufacturing technologies. The program offers a co-op option to integrate work with learning and provides graduates with a chance to apply their skills in the industry. The third year features a capstone project in which students liaise with industry partners to produce a working prototype and a full design and manufacturing package for industry.

This program offers an optional co-operative education placement. Optional co-operative education placements enable you to apply your skills and knowledge in a work environment and gain valuable, practical experience related to your program of study. You will learn new skills, learn about the world of work and meet people in your profession.

For students who are accepted into the optional co-operative education placements, three co-op placements will take place. The first four-month optional co-operative education placement is between Semesters 2 and 3, and then two consecutive four-month optional co-operative education placements between Semesters 4 and 5. There are limited spaces in the co-op option. Therefore, you will apply for the co-op option during Semester 1 and be informed of the process by which to apply. While optional co-operative education placement opportunities are not guaranteed, as students are in a competitive job placement market, participating students will receive a wide range of services to help them find a co-op opportunity.

Our graduates are able to perform mechanical design and equipment/technology selection for mechanical systems; support fabrication and engineering staff, vendors, clients processes, tools and inspection requirements; prepare preliminary and final cost estimates; and prepare and evaluate production processes, costing, tool design and inspection requirements.

Graduates find employment opportunities in a variety of industrial sectors including manufacturing, automotive, energy, mining, service, food and packaging, transportation, and maintenance.

Graduates work in:

• drafting and design, equipment testing, mechanical equipment installation and consulting engineering offices
• programming, cost estimating, quality control and inspection, machinery sale, and in the metal cutting industries
