Why is this course for me?

This four-year programme provides you with everything you need to pursue a career in business, while also developing your understanding of Chinese language (Mandarin) and Chinese culture.

China is one of the largest, fastest-growing countries in the world. By combining an understanding of its language and culture with the sound foundations in business provided by the BComm (see page 80), you will have a degree that can open the door to a career in international business.

What will I study?

Your business studies will mirror the new BComm curriculum, which is outlined on the Commerce description (please click here). Stages 1 and 2 (first and second year) focus on the core learning skills and competencies necessary to succeed in university. You will develop your knowledge of the foundations of business and start learning key subjects such as Marketing, Accounting, Economics and Human Resource Management.

You will also, of course, study Chinese language and Chinese culture as an integral part of the programme.

In Stage 3 (third year), you attend one of our partner Chinese universities or business schools in China, and follow a full academic programme of business in English, as well as taking further language modules.

When you return to UCD in Stage 4 (fourth year), you will continue to study Chinese language and Chinese economy along with your studies in Business. With your strong foundation in all areas of business from previous stages, you now have the opportunity to take modules in areas that most appeal to you and where you can see your career developing.

Career & Graduate Study Opportunities

You will emerge from this programme with an internationally recognized business degree. Major universities and professional bodies around the world recognise our degrees, and combining business with Chinese studies means you will be highly sought after by Irish and multinational companies, and will have the possibility of working in China itself. You can pursue a career directly in a wide range of business areas such as:
• Accountancy
• Banking and finance
• Marketing
• Advertising and PR
• Human resources management
• The non-profit sector
• IT
• Sales

Many of our graduates also go on to study for a master’s degree at UCD Michael Smurfit Graduate Business School, or at other universities in Ireland or overseas.

International Study Opportunity:

In Stage 3, you will study abroad at one of our prestigious partner universities or business schools in China. This year-long adventure allows you to embrace your chosen language, experience a new culture, meet students from other countries and gain practical life experience. This enables you to integrate your language and business knowledge, helping you to do business in China later on in your career.

Student Profile

I chose this programme because I have always had an interest in China and its culture. I always wanted to study the BComm and when the combination of BComm and Chinese came to UCD Quinn School I knew it was the programme for me! I really like the way the class is so small – we have 14 in our year, which means we get one on one attention. We also have separate lectures in Chinese culture and society where we learn valuable information about China and how it has changed to become the fastest growing economy in the world. While we are with our immediate class for the Chinese aspect we are also with the other BComm students for all business aspects of the programme, which means you meet so many new people while also being part of a small intimate course.

When I’m finished this four-year programme and have done my year abroad in China I hope to have a good knowledge of both the Chinese language and its culture. I would love to work abroad and China offers a lot of opportunities. If I change my mind, there is always a demand for people who have knowledge of China, its customs and language and with a business degree to work in Ireland in conjunction with companies over there.
