UBC Approved Prerequisites at VCCT.

Good news for any students who are thinking of undertaking further education and are interested in the Counselling Psychology MEd or MA Program at UBC.

The following VCCT courses have been approved as equivalent to the following prerequisites for the CNPS MA Program:

UBC & VCCT Counselling Psychology MEd or MA Program
UBC Prerequisites VCCT Equivalent Prerequisites
CNPS 362 (Basic Interviewing Skills) = CCS 600 (Clinical Counselling Skills)
CNPS 363 (Career Counselling) = CCO 600 (Introduction to Career Counselling)
CNPS 365 (Theories of Counselling) = MOD 600 (Models of Counselling)
    or CSM 600 (Case Study Approaches to Models of Counselling)
Abnormal or Behavioural Disorders = IPP 600 (Introduction to Psychopathology)

This means that students at VCCT who have undertaken the above courses at VCCT will be eligible to apply to the UBC masters programs if they fulfill the other admission criteria specified by UBC.

New Transfer Credits to Trinity Western University (TWU).

Students who have completed the VCCT diploma program will receive 36 credits towards their BA in Psychology at Trinity Western University.

The Breakdown is as follows (this can be explained to students who require further information):

For PSYC Majors: 30 Lower Level PSYC credit; PSYC 331 (3); and PYSC 340 (3). 36 Credits total.
Students still need to complete the required psychology courses for a psychology major as listed in the calendar.

Students who have completed the VCCT Diploma of Professional Counselling will receive credits for the following Rocky Mountain College programs:

Counselling for Intimacy in Relationships Certificate (21 Weeks)

The Counselling for Intimacy in Relationships Certificate is designed to allow students to gain familiarity with a range of contemporary models of counselling. Students will be trained to a level of competence to enable them to provide support for clients dealing with intimacy issues within relationship. Students will gain an understanding of how Psychopathology & Sexual Identity may impact intimacy in relationship. The course will help familiarize students with listening and assertiveness skills, as well as introduce different approaches to conflict resolution. Students will learn specific communication skills training essential to the adoption of healthy relationship patterns and gain an understanding of how to recognize and replace dysfunctional and distancing behaviours with healthy behavioural patterns. The program exposes students to a wide range of contemporary models of counselling applicable to a variety of populations and cultural groups.

Addictions Worker Certificate (24 Weeks)

This program is designed to introduce students to theory and skills that are applicable to working in various community support positions with substance abuse issues and populations. The program is available in both On-Campus and Distance Education formats. Courses are in-depth with 60 hours of classroom time in each which is almost double the usual number of hours in University courses. Courses are taught by experienced therapists who have specialized knowledge of substance abuse, its management and treatment. Each course is also designed to offer students the opportunity for extensive experiential learning through hands-on skill practice which facilitates the generalization of skills to real world settings after graduation. The program exposes the student to a range of models of substance abuse etiology and intervention that includes individual, family, community, and cultural factors. In addition to earning the Addictions Worker Certificate students may also apply these credits to earning the full VCCT Diploma in Professional Counselling should they chose to take additional courses. Due to demand enrollment may be limited in this popular specialization so plan for registration early if interested.

Youth & Family Support Worker Certificate (24 Weeks)

The Youth & Family Support Worker Certificate is designed to familiarize students with the ability to recognize symptoms associated with the most frequently encountered issues in children and adolescents today. Evidence-based methods of cognitive and behavioral interventions will be reviewed and practiced in case studies.

Specific Objectives Include:

  • Overview of recent developments in cognitive-behavioral approaches to issues in children and adolescents.
  • Survey of most commonly encountered symptom complexes in children and adolescents.
  • Views of recognize contemporary experts on current evidence-based cognitive-behavioral therapy techniques best suited to specific psychopathologies.
  • Understanding of common childhood and adolescent issues.
  • Identification of scope of practice of support counsellors with issues with children and adolescents.
  • The ability to develop treatment plans using cognitive-behavioral interventions at appropriate levels for support counsellors.

Career Exploration & Development Skills Certificate (18 weeks)

The Career Exploration & Development Skills Certificate is designed to allow students to both explore their own career development as well as become familiar with current career counselling research, concepts, and employment facilitation skills. Students will be trained to a level of competence enabling them to provide a variety of approaches to career exploration and employment counselling applicable across different community settings. It is available in both on-campus and distance education formats. Courses are in-depth with 60 hours of classroom time in each which is about double the time in similar university courses. This extra time allows for a high level of hands on skill practice. Courses are taught by experienced counsellors who have specialized knowledge in this area. The program exposes students to a wide range of contemporary models of career exploration and counselling techniques applicable to a variety of populations and cultural groups. In addition, earning the Career Exploration & Development Skills Certificate also allows students to apply credits earned in this certificate toward other VCCT diplomas should students want to further their counselling education and skills.
