Program Description
The Master of Urban Planning (M.U.P.) in Urban Planning (Non-Thesis) offered by the Department of Urban Planning in the Faculty of Engineering is a course-based program that emphasizes hands-on and thought-provoking learning opportunities. The program's objective is to equip students with skills in planning, urban design, and project evaluation to pursue professional opportunities (or potentially continue their studies).
Aside from the general program, there are two additional options:
Transportation Planning option: enables students to specialize in the field of Transportation Planning through studio courses, an internship, and a final project involving real-life applications and research.
Urban Development and Urban Design option: aims to produce graduates who are skilled in analysis and design for development in existing (sub)urban landscapes and urbanizing contexts, whether in North America or elsewhere. Additional courses in this option include focusing on urban design, real estate, the politics of development, and urban governance. Note: Students seeking to specialize in Urban Development and Urban Design must apply at the end of their first year of study.

Unique Program Features
- The program provides students with opportunities to explore Montréal as a living laboratory for urban planning, policy, and design while emphasizing the acquisition of skills used in the analysis of complex problems, policies, and strategies;
- The program is recognized by the Ordre des urbanistes du Québec (OUQ) and the Canadian Institute of Planners (CIP) meaning graduates may become full members of the OUQ and other provincial planning associations by completing their respective internship and examination requirements;
- As part of the program, a Summer internship must be completed under the supervision of a member of a recognized planning association in a field of specialization and geographic location chosen by the student;
- The core and complementary courses, internship, and a final research project prepare students for professional practice in a variety of areas;
- Courses are typically taken within the School of Urban Planning though in some cases may also be taken with other academic units at McGill University, or at any of the three other major academic institutions in Montréal.
University-Level Admission Requirements
- An eligible Bachelor's degree with a minimum 3.0 GPA out of a possible 4.0 GPA
- English-language proficiency
