PhD Program

Program requirements:

a total of at least 12 graded units of course weight at the graduate level for students who do not have a Master's degree;
or, at least 6 graded units at the graduate level for students who have a Master's degree:
  • LABMP 530 (3 units) is recommended;
  • students who choose to specialize must take the required associated course(s)
  • other courses as approved by the student's supervisor/supervisory committee
academic integrity and ethics training  / Ethics and Academic Citizenship 
professional development requirement [for students admitted Fall 2016 and after]
one oral presentation at LMP Rounds
attendance at specified seminars (LMP Rounds)
PhD Proposal
Doctoral Candidacy Examination
approved research project (thesis)
final oral examination

Other than the thesis and final examination, all program requirements must be completed within the first three years.

Specialization:

All students are initially admitted to a general PhD program. Specialization is not required, but students may choose to specialize in one of the following after successfully completing the required associated course(s).

Specialization Associated Courses
Analytical & Environmental Toxicology must take LABMP 550;
recommended to take LABMP 551 also
Biopreservation must take LABMP 510;
recommended to take LABMP 511 also
Molecular Pathology must take LABMP 581;
recommended to take LABMP 500 also

 

Students must maintain a cumulative program GPA of 3.0.

Students must be full time, i.e. must be registered in 9 units of course weight (graded and ungraded, and including thesis registration) each Fall and Winter term throughout their programs. Students new as of Fall 2011 must also be registered in Thesis 906 for each Spring and Summer term throughout their programs.

The minimum length of the PhD program is 3 years to a maximum of 6 years. Average completion time is 5.82 years.
