Program Overview

If you are new to post-secondary education, Humber's Media Foundation certificate program will help you to develop foundational knowledge and skills in digital media, communications, writing, and design as preparation for further study in advanced media programs in Humber's Faculty of Media & Creative Arts.

You will use up-to-date, industry-standard software to create various media content as you gain a broad understanding of what it’s like to work in different sectors of the media industry. Media Foundation is designed with input from industry partners and is taught by faculty with strong industry connections and experience who can give you valuable insights into the trends and realities of the media industry.

This program is designed with input from industry partners and is taught by faculty with strong industry connections and experience who can give you valuable insights into the trends and realities of the media industry. In the first semester, you will develop strong skills for successful post-secondary learning while you are introduced to visual literacy, film studies, media communications and digital design. In your second and final semester, you will consolidate your general theoretical knowledge by choosing five electives from Special Projects, Video Production, Script Writing, Audio and Video Editing, Television Studio Production, Image Capture, and Design for Media 2.

Designed for students who are new to post-secondary education and media, this two-semester program will give you a broad understanding of what it is like to work in different sectors of the media industry, and will help you to develop a career focus in preparation for future learning and success in the workplace.

Pathways

Media Foundation offers transfer credits for a number of FMCA diploma programs and a block transfer that allows Media Foundation graduates to start in the second semester of the Media Communications diploma. As well, students who do not have university English, but who receive a 65% in their WRIT course in the first semester of Media Foundation, will meet the requirements needed to apply to many degree programs at Humber.

Support

A core value in Media Foundation is accessibility. We believe all students should have the opportunity to learn, and we will work with you to help you succeed. If you feel that you would be better suited to part-time study, please contact the program co-ordinator who will help you make a plan for completion over two years.

Taking Media Foundations was one of the best decisions I ever made! The diversity of the program let me explore all the options I could possibly have in the industry and find what my calling in the media industry really was! I also learned so many valuable skills to help me along the way. I made lifelong friends in this program. Creative, smart, and caring people who I am better for having in my life.

Meet Nicoro Vassell. After graduating from the one-year Media Foundation certificate, Nicoro is pursuing further study in Humber's Broadcast Television Videography diploma program.

Accessibility is a core value in the Media Foundation program, and all students learn the skills to create accessible media so that their stories can reach the largest audience.

In their reflective response to the online course Making Accessible Media (MAM), included as part of Media Foundation curriculum, Tate Smirle (2021-2022 cohort) recorded their response, wrote a transcript, uploaded a braille font to their computer, printed out the pages, and created the raised dots of braille on a sheet of paper by hand.
