Humber is proud to have the highest graduate employment and employer satisfaction rate of the GTA colleges based on Colleges Ontario’s key performance indicators for college graduates in 2022-2023.

Program Overview

Humber’s English for Academic Purposes (EAP) certificate program is an intensive, full-time academic pathway program. The program integrates receptive (listening/reading) and productive (speaking/writing) skills together with interaction (including online interaction) and mediation language activities and strategies with the focus on communicative academic English. You will benefit from innovative language study skills and accessible individual tutoring support. The curriculum is geared toward non-native speakers of English who want to improve their language competence and fluency in writing, communication and critical thinking skills for entry into most college diploma, degree and graduate certificate programs or for further professional development.

The program consists of:

  • eight levels that each run for seven weeks. The length of study will be based on the assigned entry level which is determined by the English proficiency test results. For placement level information, visit here
  • 20 hours per week of in-class and online instruction (blended learning)
  • additional hours every week completing computer assisted language learning (CALL) activities including additional reading activities, vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation and digital literacy skills under the guidance of a Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) certified lab co-ordinator

Our faculty are dedicated professionals who have been teaching, publishing, and working in the English as a Second Language ESL/EAP field for many years. They all hold graduate credentials including solid training in ESL/EAP teaching.

Improving your language skills in the EAP program has the additional benefit of allowing you to become familiar with Humber faculty, staff, administration and campus life. Our college community guides your transition into your future academic study at Humber.

Our advisory committee provides regular review of and input into our curriculum, ensuring our program is always on the forefront of post-secondary and industry developments.

Students in EAP Levels 7 and 8 may have the option to take these levels fully online dependent on enrollment and availability.

Admission to Humber Through EAP

Completion of EAP level 8 meets the language proficiency requirements for admission to most Humber programs. For students completing level 8 with no failed courses and with the appropriate grades (see below), no further IELTS or TOEFL testing is required.

Online EAP Placement Testing

Note to EAP Applicants

You have two options for pre-placement to your EAP level:

  1. Submit your IELTS, TOEFL, PET, or CAEL result to Humber. We use your score to place you in an appropriate EAP level
  2. Take the online Duolingo placement test to assess your English proficiency level and to place you at the appropriate level within our English for Academic Purposes program

Please have your test results sent to Humber. Once we receive your test results your offer letter will be issued.

For instructions on how to send your Duolingo results, go here.

Please carefully read the communications from Humber Admissions about the tests you can take and the link to take them.
