Residents from UM's Department of Surgery who are interested in pursuing a Master of Science in Surgery Graduate Program during their training may request a short-term extension of training to accommodate their pursuit.
Tuition and related educational expenses for the master's program is the responsibility of the resident and will not be reimbursed by PGME.
Trainees enrolled in residency programs that have academic enrichment opportunities incorporated in the competencies of the residency program curriculum are not eligible to apply for the extension of training related to the Master of Science in Surgery.
These programs include the following:
- Cardiac surgery
- Neurosurgery
Individuals interested must follow the process as outlined below.
Expression of interest
The resident must draft an expression of interest document, outlining the
following;
- The specific Master of Science in Surgery Graduate Program research project they are interested in pursuing
- The specific starting and ending dates of the research project
- The reason(s) for pursuing the additional education
The expression of interested document must be presented to, supported and signed by the residency program director.
Application and approval of Master of Science in Surgery Graduate Program
- The resident must complete the Application Guide and Supplemental Form.
- The resident must arrange a meeting through the Department of Surgery Research and Graduate Office with the graduate chair to review the applicant’s research proposal and the accompanying documentation for approval before admission to the Faculty of Graduate Studies can be approved.
PGME approval for extension of training
- In order to obtain an extension of training for the resident who has been admitted to the Faculty of Graduate Studies to pursue the Master of Science in Surgery Graduate Program, the residency program director must submit an application for extension with supporting documentation to the associate dean, PGME no later than November 15 of the academic year prior to the start of the Master of Science in Surgery Graduate Program.
- Upon review of the application for extension of training, the associate dean, PGME may call a meeting to discuss the Master of Science in Surgery Graduate Program with the residency program director and the graduate chair, Department of Surgery.
- The associate dean, PGME will determine if the request is approved, denied or deferred.
Final approval
- The resident will be granted an extension of training for the duration of the Master of Science in Surgery Graduate Program (for a maximum of one year).
- The resident will not advance their PGY level during the time that they are enrolled in the Master of Science in Surgery Graduate Program. The resident will advance to the next PGY level once they return to their regular activities in the residency program.
- The resident will continue to be accounted for in one of the Shared Health funded spots while attending the program.

- Trainee to submit a University of Manitoba Concurrent registration form to regpgme@umanitoba.ca once it has been signed off by the Faculty of Graduate Studies Program
