Chemistry

Chemistry is often described as the central science. It focuses on the structure, properties, and synthesis of virtually everything, from the plastics we use to the air we breathe.

By choosing to study chemistry at Acadia, you will focus on the structure, properties, and synthesis of matter. This includes everything from the air we breathe and the water we drink to the plastics we use and the medicine we take.

As a chemistry student, you can become an important part of leading-edge research. You will learn in small, hands-on classroom and laboratory environments. You will have academic options:

  • Honours BSc in chemistry
  • BSc with major in chemistry
  • BSc with double major

You may also participate in Acadia’s award-winning co-op program. Both the honours BSc and BSc with major in chemistry are accredited by the Canadian Institute of Chemistry, which allows you to meet professional licensing standards after graduation.

Many of our graduates go on to have a very high success rate in fields such as medicine, dentistry, and pharmacy.

Acadia’s chemistry department has faculty members who are active in many research areas. These include the following:

  • environmental chemistry
  • chemical biology
  • health and wellness
  • materials science
  • photochemistry
  • photophysics

You will benefit from small class sizes, engaging researchers, and friendly faculty and staff. You will also have access to top-notch research tools and facilities. You will have the option to enhance your post-secondary education by pursuing independent research projects and summer research jobs under the supervision of our faculty members.
