The International Association of Film and Television Schools is the association of the world’s major film and television schools. Founded in Cannes in 1955, we are one of only 13 member film courses in the UK and one of only nine offering undergraduate tuition. The Film and Television programme is a ScreenSkills and CILECT accredited course that provides an environment in which students can grow into confident television and film practitioners. Our course is designed to put the industry and its needs at the heart of our teaching. Students learn professional skills from the outset, managing and producing their own location and studio-based shoots, and getting the opportunity to experience a variety of key roles on set and in post-production.

We are proud to be in partnership with the Edinburgh International Television Festival talent network scheme. The opportunity exists for final year students to apply for this highly acclaimed new talent programme. This can help fast track you to employment via mentorship and internships from leading companies and broadcasters such as BBC, Endemol, ITV and Sky.

In post-production, we are members of ENVY Academy which provides graduates with the chance to work with ENVY Post-Production in London. Several graduates have gone on to start the careers at ENVY working on productions including The Chase and Gogglebox.

This gives our students strong employability skills. Many prize winners go onto jobs with our industry partners.

Film and Television facilities

The course regularly invests in high quality production and post-production equipment, often making new purchases every year.

Our camera range includes Blackmagic URSA 4.6K digital cinema cameras, Canon C100, Canon XF305, and Panasonic 371; with lenses from Zeiss and Samyang. Our production equipment includes Kino Flo and Arri lamps; Sennheiser, SQN and Zoom microphones and recorders; and our professional grip equipment includes Steadicam rigs, Jibs, and Dollies.

The Mike Newell Sound Stage TV Studio is a large dedicated HD broadcast standard facility complete with a railed light rig and pedestal cameras with autocue systems, green screen and vision mixer. Students also have access to the Doug Milsome Cinematography Lab for technical training and small-scale filming.

Our post-production facilities consist of the 40 seat Walter Murch Post-Production Lab and a second 40 seat dedicated lab with major post production software available from Avid Media Composer and Pro Tools for picture and sound editing, Baselight and DaVinci Resolve for colour correction and Final Draft for scriptwriting and production planning.

A 120 terabyte shared storage facility by EditShare running an award nominated workflow (Finalist, Broadcast Tech Awards 2021) enables students to edit projects collaboratively and simultaneously, mirroring industry standard workflows and practice, while also giving students access to our library of over 23,000 sound effects and 4,000 music tracks to use in their edits.

Additional dedicated individual post production suites ideal for colour grading, and dubbing studios for ADR and audio finishing are available for students to book.

Mike is the director of Four Weddings and a Funeral, Donnie Brasco, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. Mike gives guest masterclasses, and invited students to the post sound mix of his films.

What's the course about?

Film and television production is one of the largest growth areas in the creative industries, with major international productions coming to the UK to find the best crews and creatives in the world. Taught by industry professionals and using the latest technology, you will develop the practical skills, creative abilities, technical expertise and business know-how to really kick-start your career. You’ll also take advantage of our excellent links with industry partners, including Warner Bros Studios Leavesden and Elstree Studios, as well as opportunities for work placements and employment.

Your main campus is College Lane 

This is where the creative arts, science and health-related subjects are based. This means you’ll share the campus with future nurses, scientists, artists and more. You can use the common rooms to relax with friends, work out in the 24-hour gym or have a drink in our on-campus pub or cafes. We also have restaurants for you to eat in or grab something on the go. Our Learning Resources Centres are open 24/7, which means you can study whenever suits you best. Want to pop over to the other campus? You can take the free shuttle bus or walk there in just 15 minutes.   

What will I study?

The course is taught as a range of lectures, workshops, seminars and tutorials. Practical workshops run each week in location kit and post-production, and dedicated TV studio sessions; while theory modules have screening programmes; and students organise and schedule their own film shoots off campus during filming weeks.

Introduction to Film and TV Craft Skills	45 Credits	Compulsory
This module introduces students to practical television programme and film making. In classes and workshops, students will learn to use the key tools of the film and programme maker – referred to in industry as 'Craft Skills'. These craft skills include the use of cameras, lenses, lights, microphones, and post-prodcution software and technology, and so on. Typically, students will also be introduced to the television studio and its related operation. Students will be expected to engage with all of the different craft skills in order to appreciate and understand in some detail the workflow required to take a production all the way from recording to final delivery.
Introduction to Film and TV Studies	30 Credits	Compulsory
This module examines how film and TV communicate textually, explores the social, political, economic and cultural factors that impact on them, and introduces key critical theories that surround them. A programme of lectures and seminars encourages students to understand texts within their unique historical and geographical contexts and to frame their textual and contextual analysis of these texts through the lens of theoretical frameworks. Topics may include semiotics and aesthetics; the interplay of art and commerce; British, American and transnational television history; Hollywood history; national and world cinemas; race, gender and queer representation; postcolonial theory; fan cultures and cult film; genre theory; and censorship. Learning is furthered by a directed study schedule of relevant reading and viewing as well as additional independent study. Students also gain skills in research, reading, communication, critical analysis and evaluation, and develop a vocabulary f or discussing f ilm and television texts and contexts.
Introduction to Film and TV Production	45 Credits	Compulsory
This module offers a comprehensive introduction to the techniques and processes employed by film and programme-makers in contemporary production. Students will engage with a range of creative activities, including writing, producing, directing, editing, sound recording, camera operating, colour correcting, sound design, and so on. These skills will be applied to the production of several films across the academic year. At the same time, via seminars and lectures, students will be introduced to the art of the screenplay, employing action, characters and dialogue to build an engaging narrative. They will gain an introduction to a range of script development processes and conventions of presentation. They will explore the relationship between script, filming, post-production and the finished film. At each stage, students undertake coursework assignments as part of a team.

Film and Television: Cultures and Aesthetics	30 Credits	Compulsory
This module aims to encourage students to see contextual studies as a vital tool to develop well-informed and innovative production practice in Film and Television. A programme of lectures, seminars, tutorials and screenings provides students with the opportunity to encounter a wide range of international film and television programmes and a selection of media theories, debates and critical perspectives to interrogate them. The module will focus on developing student's understanding of how critical and cultural debates impact upon media aesthetics. To complement discipline-specific studies, this module aims to provide students with a repertoire of study skills of research and enquiry, skills in visual and critical analysis of both artefacts and ideas and communications skills in written and verbal forms including the protocols of academic reference.
Film and Television Media Industries: Professional Development 1	15 Credits	Compulsory
A series of lectures, workshops, seminars and tutorials designed to develop students' awareness of the media marketplace. The module covers a range of topics including the impacts of media globalisation, the role of niche markets, film and television finance and business models, co-production, marketing and distribution. Coursework includes an analysis of a production company and planning a marketing campaign. Alternatively, students may undertake a faculty work experience instead of this module, subject to agreement with the Programme Tutor.
Film and Television Production: Pre-Production and Production	45 Credits	Compulsory
This module enhances the students' understanding of pre-production and production in factual, drama and entertainment programming – offering crossover into both factual entertainment and docu-drama productions too. Students typically investigate strategies for planning, for producing and directing in drama and working with actors. Students consider the applications of production design, locations, wardrobe and make-up. Factual production typically investigates strategies for producing and directing documentary and current affairs projects, selecting participants and interviewees and the integration of archive material. Students are introduced to the requirements of docudrama and re-enactment requiring casting, production design, wardrobe and make-up. Entertainment typically investigates strategies for producing and directing both factual entertainment programmes and studio-based projects. Typically they will work on formats, acquiring presenters and contributors and production design for studio sets. Students undertake coursework assignments in the role of director, producer and writer, as well as in technical roles as team members.
Cinematic Craft Skills	30 Credits	Compulsory
This module enhances the students' understanding of cinematic technical arts in factual, drama and entertainment programming. Students have the opportunity to major in at least one of the craft skills ranging from cinematography, sound design, picture post-production and sound mixing. Students typically learn the practical techniques for using more advanced camera and lighting techniques, grip equipment such as dollies and cranes, fiction sound recording and mixing; while in the studio, they will work on more advanced skills in studio operations, lighting, sound and grip equipment, actual and virtual sets. Different lighting styles and techniques and the use of lenses and cinematography will be taught. In the post-production lab students will develop knowledge in colour grading, asset management and advanced post-production techniques.
Drama and Documentary	45 Credits	Compulsory
This module develops practical skills in how to produce professional dramas/documentaries from an initial idea to a completed screen product. Building on their learning in the first year, students undertake more detailed planning, preparation and be expected to collaborate with external contributors such as actors and documentary subjects.
Connecting Theory and Practice	45 Credits	Compulsory
This module connects screen studies with craft skills, building on learning at previous levels to develop an appreciation of the complementary relationship between practice and research. It introduces a range of cinematic techniques, while simultaneously grounding these within a theoretical framework using a variety of case studies.
Film and TV Studies and Contexts	30 Credits	Compulsory
This module develops students' contextual and professional understanding of film and television and their industrial, historical and aesthetical development. Semester A will cover film and television industries, business practices, markets and audiences. In Semester B, students will select from a series of specialist options exploring film and television topics in-depth.
Year Abroad	0 Credits	Optional
The Year Abroad will provide students in Creative Arts with the opportunity to expand, develop and apply the knowledge and skills gained in the first two taught years of the degree within a different organisational and cultural environment in a partner academic institution. The host institution will appoint a Programme Co-ordinator who will oversee the student's programme during the Year Abroad and will liaise with the appointed UH Supervisor.
Professional Work Experience 15: Screen	15 Credits	Optional
Students may identify a work experience opportunity or have a work experience suggested to them. Before starting students meet with the Programme Leader or their nominated tutor, to agree the impending placement. All aspects of the intended experience are addressed from health and safety to client confidentiality and students are given guidance on behaviour and how to manage expectations. Proposals need to identify an outline work programme, the number of days in placement and the main learning outcomes; and are subject to agreement of the Programme Leader.

Level 6

The Year Abroad will provide students in Creative Arts with the opportunity to expand, develop and apply the knowledge and skills gained in the first two taught years of the degree within a different organisational and cultural environment in a partner academic institution. The host institution will appoint a Programme Co-ordinator who will oversee the student's programme during the Year Abroad and will liaise with the appointed UH Supervisor.
Integrated Marketing and Distribution	45 Credits	Compulsory
In this module, students undertake the planning and development of their major film project as well as devising an appropriate marketing strategy to accompany it. They also focus on their own career planning in readiness for industry entry at the end of their studies.
Major Production Project	45 Credits	Compulsory
Students will be responsible for planning and directing a major film project as a team, with each student forming part of a production crew. Working in these production groups students will plan, shoot, edit and post-produce this project for completion and delivery in the manner of a professional production.
Major Screen Study	30 Credits	Compulsory
In this module, students produce a critical study of a Film&TV topic of their choosing, shaping it into a research question with the help of their tutors, enabling each student to frame their learning around their particular area of interest. Submitted as a written essay, video essay or industry report.
Sandwich Year (Creative Arts)	0 Credits	Optional
The optional 'Sandwich' placement year may be undertaken between the levels 5 and 6. Students undertake the placement within a commercial, public or not for profit setting that is able to provide an appropriate learning experience related to the creative and cultural industries. A placement could take a variety of forms, including: * working in an external organisation; * working with a University company or professional team within the University; * self-employment within defined context and externally refereed. The placement duration would typically be sustained for at least 36 weeks (from a maximum of two separate placements, neither of which should normally be less than 12 weeks in duration), though may be sustained for a full year. While the School actively supports the placement process, ultimately it is the placement provider that will agree to manage and select students, normally through an interview process. During the placement a member of the academic staff will be assigned to the student as a tutor and will monitor the student's progress during the placement period.
Employment Experience (Creative Arts)	0 Credits	Optional
Optional Employment Experience may be undertaken between the levels 5 and 6. Students undertake the placement within a commercial, public or not for profit setting that is able to provide an appropriate learning experience related to the creative and cultural industries. If you take up a work placement between your second and third year of study, at the University of Hertfordshire you’ll pay no tuition fee for this year. We’ll ask you to make your decision in your second year, so there is plenty of time to think about it.

There is also a work experience module that you can complete. The course has a dedicated Professional Development expert to help marry up students with work experience opportunities.

Throughout the academic year, the course often is approached to engage and work on live projects, and students are given the opportunity to crew and be involved in working on productions for real clients. Recent examples include working on a documentary for Sky Arts, cinematography for a series of live music records for a classical ensemble, and filming for an evening at Elstree Studios with Dame Diana Rigg.

Studying on the Film and Television degree at Hertfordshire also offers you the unique opportunity to gain accredited work experience on our own ongoing live research activity - The Elstree Project.

Since the project began in 2010, over 60 students have been crew members on interview shoots with veterans from the film and television industry at the studios of Elstree and Borehamwood. Some of the stories our students have heard first-hand include what it was like to operate the film camera for Star Wars, design props for Stanley Kubrick, and floor manage The Muppet Show, all while getting the opportunity to further their practical filmmaking skills.

Our interviewees include Steven Spielberg, Walter Murch, Simon Pegg, Christiane Kubrick and Brian Blessed. Trips to the studios are a regular part of the project, and the work forms part of a vitally important archive.

During my degree, my tutors taught me invaluable lessons about the industry, including everything from producing a film to pitching a short film idea of your own. I learned the importance of expressing myself and my own opinions when working in groups with others. I found the importance of having confidence in your own ideas. Without my degree from the University of Hertfordshire, I would not be the same person I am today. I now consider myself to be a more confident person with enthusiasm, organisational skills, and an eagerness to learn, and I am ready to apply my skillset and experience to a career in film and television.

University experience and opportunities

Tomi took advantage of all of the opportunities that were available to her, both inside and outside of her course. She says, 'The University gave me the chance to develop my public speaking skills, both on my course but mainly whilst being a Student Ambassador. I led a lot of the accommodation tours on College Lane and De Havilland campuses, which was a huge confidence booster.'

Tomi had a great time at the University and says, 'My degree was all coursework based which worked well for me as exams had always made me feel uneasy. My course mates were very supportive. I thoroughly enjoyed working and collaborating together on projects. The loan store was also super useful as they provided free photographic equipment for us to use for the duration of the course.'

She encourages future and current students to make the most of what the University has to offer. She says, 'Don't be scared if you're going on your own. Make use of your time inside and outside of your course. Join clubs and make new friends. As a photography student, be open to criticism and other people's creative ideas. Not everyone sees your vision and that's okay as there's always room for improvement!'

Future aspirations

Tomi is determined to continue to develop in her role and possibly take her next steps to work on London-based productions. She says, 'I love my job and I hope to expand further within the film and TV industry. One day I’d love to work on-set and experience how a production is made.’
