Visual methods are becoming an increasingly popular option in psychology and the social sciences and this course will further develop your skills in collecting, analysing and editing visual and arts-based data in research. Build on your own interests, networks and communities while you apply your artistic and visual skills to an independent research project.

Why study Visual and Arts-based Methods by Research MSc at Middlesex University?

This MRes is ideal for those wanting to develop their ability in visual and creative research methods and apply these skills to their area of interest. You will become part of our thriving creative community and take part in the visual and creative projects in the department as well as showcase your own work at internal and external events.

You will be taught by internationally recognised researchers with expertise across different visual modes and art-forms on a one-to-one basis. Your workshops, tutorials and seminars will be tailored to your previous skills and experience, specific needs and requirements, current interests and research aims. You will also be able to pursue a specific research project in collaboration with experts in the field.

Become part of a national and international collaborative research network and have the opportunity to join our Visual and Arts-based Research Group, and have a visual researcher as your dedicated supervisor.

What will you study on MSc Visual and Arts-based Methods by Research?

This course will allow you to explore a range of contemporary visual and arts-based research methods and you will develop your skills in collecting, analysing, editing and disseminating visual and arts-based data.

You'll be taught by an experienced teaching team with a wide range of expertise and professional experience.

This programme is a unique, research-based course, which does not follow the traditional model of lectures and exams. You will join the research community through an ongoing series of workshops and optional lectures. The MRes will enable you to excel in both the academic sector and the job market through individually tailored learning experiences.

Your assessment will be based on a final dissertation of no more than 12,000 words and an arts-based or visual output such as an ethnographic documentary, non-factual film, photographic or arts-based project.

Your dissertation will be read and evaluated, and you will be invited to make a oral presentation of your work.

We normally require a second class honours degree 2:2 or above in any discipline
Entry is subject to the proposed project being accepted
Each application will be considered on its individual merits

Prior experience with visual and arts-based methods is welcome but not required. Students with less experience, or who wish to do so, will be able to attend lectures and other learning activities from the course Visual Research Methods.

If you have relevant qualifications or work experience, academic credit may be awarded towards your Middlesex University programme of study.

Visas

You will not need a visa to study in the UK if you are a citizen of Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway or Switzerland. If you are a national of any other country you may need a visa to study in the UK.

Part-time study

International applicants can apply for a Student Route (formerly tier 4) visa for part-time postgraduate study (courses leading to a qualification at RQF level 7 or SCQF level 11 and above).

Student Route visa students studying part-time are subject to certain restrictions:

no work (paid or unpaid)
no work placements as part of the programme
no dependants
no extending under Student route visa in the UK. This includes Student route visa applications to work as a Students' Union Sabbatical Officer or for the Foundation Programme for postgraduate doctors and dentists
not eligible for the Student route visa Doctorate Extension Scheme

*Please note that, if the course of your choice involves work experience, unpaid work, placements or internships, we will be unable to sponsor you to study a part- time course under the Student route (formerly tier 4) visa.

English language

You must have competence in English language to study with us. The most commonly accepted evidence of English language ability is IELTS 6.5 (with minimum 6.0 in all components). We also normally require Grade C GCSE or an equivalent qualification.

If you don't meet our minimum English language requirements, we offer an intensive pre-sessional English course.

To apply for this course, please log into the online application system and select the MSc by Research (ST) application option.

You will also need to:

Write a research proposal.
Gather the following compulsory supporting documents, in electronic format:
- all your academic documentation (including transcripts and certificates)
- your passport
- your sponsorship letter (if you are not paying your own fees)
- your IELTS, TOEFL or other equivalent English Language certificates (if your first language is not English).

Further information

Candidates already based in the UK who wish to enrol on this MSc by Research may also apply by the the last day of July using our online application.

You can start your MSc by Research at two specific times of the year. These are October and January. Please apply by August 1 for an October start, and November 1 for a January start.

If your application is suitable, you will be invited for interview (in person or by Skype) within three weeks of your date of application.
