Social Work Foundation (MSWF)

The Master of Social Work foundation program is intended for students without a BSW degree. You must have a 4-year undergraduate degree and at least 2 years of full-time human services experience.

We accept students every other September in odd-numbered years. The foundation core courses are delivered on campus in a full-time cohort model.

Outcomes

Students in this program will:

  • examine the challenges, contributions, constraints and contexts for critical social work practice
  • apply critical social work practice that is rooted in a vision of social justice
  • gain accountable and oppositional education, research, and practice in the advancement of decolonization, Indigenous-focused, anti-racist, feminist and queer (among other) social justice struggles
  • uphold the values of equity, diversity and inclusion in their living, learning and work environments
  • emphasize social justice, Indigenous and anti-oppressive approaches to working with communities, families and individuals.

Applicants must have at least two years of full-time, or equivalent (approximately 3000 hours), paid or volunteer human services experience. This can include work in areas such as health, education, housing, income security, economic development, social justice, justice and public safety, community development and/or policy/advocacy work. Practicums, internships and co-op are not eligible.

As part of your application, you must also submit: 

  • Statement of intent. The form will be available on the School of Social Work MSW application page during the application period.   
  • Experience summary. The form will be available on the School of Social Work MSW application page during the application period.
  • Updated CV. Please include education, employment, volunteer work and accomplishments or initiatives.
  • Names and email addresses of two references. These may be two academic references or one academic and one employer reference.
  • Post-secondary transcripts.
