PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The First Nations Bachelor of Teaching (FNBT) program is being offered in response to the shortage of teachers at locally controlled and First Nations community schools.

Yellowquill University College is a culturally land-based teacher education program that aims to meet the needs of locally controlled schools by providing training in 2 streams:

  1. On campus in Winnipeg

  2. Community-based

We currently deliver the program in the following First Nations:

  • Red Sucker Lake First Nation

  • Wasagamack First Nation

  • St. Theresa Point First Nation

  • Cross Lake First Nation

  • Garden Hill First Nation (anticipated start of Fall 2024)

With a program launch of over 150 students and 5 communities building stronger learning communities, we are working to recreate “Wahbung” by remembering and looking forward.

The FNBT is a two-tiered program that aims to provide a solid foundation of First Nations studies courses that align with the certification requirements of licensed teachers. The first tier is 90 credit hours (3 years), designed to prepare teachers to teach in First Nations. The second tier (additional 2 years) is comprised of an additional 60 credit hours that help fulfill provincial requirements, including all provincially mandated practicum requirements.

Our overall goal is to create partnerships with other universities and the Province of Manitoba to ensure students will receive recognition for their studies through collaboration, articulation and provincial recognition. This is in development. This means that teachers completing the program are extremely well prepared to be teachers in their home communities and other First Nations schools and with completion of the additional 2 years will soon have provincial certification with the Province of Manitoba.
