Why choose the Foundation Year in Science at Middlesex?
The Foundation Year in Science is offered as an entry route to a science degree for students who don't yet meet the entry requirements for degree-level study or who are not ready for a three-year degree.
This may be because you don't have the right qualifications or feel you are not ready for degree-level study – or perhaps you are returning to study and want to get up to speed before starting a degree.
You will need to enrol on a four-year course, which includes the one-year foundation course. When you complete this year successfully you will progress directly onto one of our three-year degree courses.

About your course
This is a one-year foundation course which leads to a full three-year undergraduate degree. You will study all four modules simultaneously over the year which means you have the chance to examine topics in-depth.
This module explores fundamental concepts and principles in biology and chemistry to support future studies in programmes related to life sciences. Lectures will provide explanations of key biological and chemical concepts, seminars and workshops will consist of interactive activities and group events, and lab sessions will enable you to develop core laboratory skills and practice.
This module introduces some fundamental mathematical topics and concepts that are required in a range of subjects studied at degree level. In a structured and supportive environment, you will begin to develop an appreciation of the importance of mathematics as an aid to understand and describe abstract ideas.

The aim of this module is to provide you with an understanding of the fundamental concepts in chemistry and biochemistry to support your future studies in Natural Sciences. You will study a range of topics such as atomic structure, chemical bonding, acids and bases, and chemical equilibria. Your learning will be enhanced through laboratory sessions, enabling you to put theory into practice.

Teaching
You'll be taught by an experienced teaching team who have a wide range of expertise and professional experience. The team includes academics, professional practitioners, and technical staff. Graduate teaching assistants or trained postgraduate research students may also have input into your teaching under the supervision of the module leader.
The foundation year aims to engage you in all aspects of your learning.
You will gain knowledge, understanding and skills through interactive online lectures, and workshops, online activities and tests, guided research, individual and group projects and virtual laboratories and face-to-face laboratories. You will receive formative verbal feedback in live teaching practical sessions and summative feedback is provided electronically and/or verbally.
You will be studying at our leafy north London campus in Hendon.
Our excellent teaching and support teams will help you develop your skills from research and practical skills to critical thinking. Our Sheppard Library is open 24 hours a day during term time. And we offer free 24-hour laptop loans with full desktop software, free printing and Wi-Fi to use on or off campus.
Your knowledge and understanding is assessed by individual written assignments and tests, pair and group presentations, learning logs, and demonstrations.
There are informal tests or assignments which usually take place at least once per module, from which you’ll receive feedback from your tutor. The grades from these tests don’t count towards your final marks.
There are formal assessments for each module, usually at the end, which will count towards your module and your final marks.
Assessments are reviewed annually and may be updated based on student feedback or feedback from an external examiner.

Qualifications
55–64 UCAS points
We accept a wide range of international qualifications such as A level and International Baccalaureate. You can find out more on your country's support page. If you need help with your application, please contact your nearest regional office.
English language
You'll need good English language skills to study with us. That's usually an IELTS 6.0 qualification (with a minimum of 5.5 in all sections). And, if you need help, we offer an intensive pre-sessional English course.
