School Based Training 1: Reflections on Practice

In your second year, you'll learn about operating systems, databases, data science and data structures. For your final year, you'll have the chance to specialise in areas such as mobile application development and distributed systems, as well as complete an industrially relevant project. Meanwhile, your education modules will involve you studying Computer Science Teaching and Learning in year one, as well as spending six weeks working in a school. Year two will see you researching Computer Science Learning, with another six-week school placement.

Your future career

The practical experience you gain on this course, and your carefully tailored programme of learning, will ensure you are ideally placed to find employment as a teacher of computer science. However, if you don't want to go on to become a teacher, the depth of knowledge you will gain in the subject will allow you to pursue employment options across a wide range of other areas.

From your first year, you will have regular experience of working and eventually teaching, in schools, so you will emerge ready to take up a teaching career straight away. You will be introduced gradually to the idea of teaching pupils computer science through three school-based placements, the last of them for a whole term. Your first visit may involve observing and getting yourself familiar with the workings of the school. By your third-year visit, however, you will be in charge of classes.

How you'll learn

When not attending timetabled lectures or workshops, you will be expected to continue learning independently through self-study. This will typically involve skills development through online study, reading journal articles and books, working on individual and group projects and preparing coursework assignments and presentations. Your independent learning is supported by a range of excellent facilities including online resources, specialist facilities, such as game labs, the library, the full Microsoft Office software, including MS Teams, and Moodle: our Virtual Learning Environment.

    Guided independent study

    Our innovative Technology Enhanced Active Learning (TEAL) approach enhances face-to-face learning by providing students with scheduled on-campus contact hours and additional learning opportunities. Through our Virtual Learning Environment (VLE), students can access course materials and resources beyond their scheduled hours. We offer access to industry-standard technology and specialised spaces to prepare students for their future careers. Dedicated time for activities and development, along with a holistic approach to learning, fosters academic, personal, and professional growth. Students benefit from career support through on-campus and virtual Career Zones, personalised support services, and a dedicated online portal, Track My Future (TMF)

    When not attending timetabled sessions, you will be expected to continue learning independently through self-study. This is a key part of university-level work. It will typically involve reading journal articles and books, preparing for seminars, preparing coursework assignments, and arranging independent skills practice sessions with your peers. In your final year, much of your independent study will be focused on your research project.

    Your independent learning is supported by a range of excellent facilities including online resources, the library, and Moodle.

    Academic support

    Your computer science modules will be delivered by the School of Architecture, Computing and Engineering, while your education modules and placements will be run by the School of Education and Communities.

    Students are supported with academic or subject-related queries by a programme director, module leaders, academic advisors (you’ll have an academic advisor from the teaching team as soon as you arrive with us), and university central support services.

    Dedicated personal tutor

    Our Docklands campus has excellent computing resources, including specialised labs to study networking and operating system environments. You'll be given software tools for programming, database development, computer-aided software engineering, internet access and web-based development. 

    Our teaching staff will give you a great deal of personal attention and feedback as you get to grips with the course content. 

    Workload

    You will be introduced gradually to the idea of teaching pupils computer science through three school-based placements, the last of them for a whole term. Your first visit may involve observing and getting yourself familiar with the workings of the school. By your third-year visit, however, you will be in charge of classes.

    Your timetable

    You will receive your personalised timetable at the beginning of the academic year depending on your course. Whilst we make every effort to ensure timetables are as student-friendly as possible, scheduled teaching can take place on any day of the week between 9am and 6pm.

    Class sizes

    The size of classes can vary depending on the nature of the course, module and activity. This can range from large groups in a lecture theatre setting, to smaller groups taking part in seminars and collaborative work.

How you'll be assessed

Assessment tasks are mainly spread across the year to make the workload manageable. Assessment methods include group work, exams and individual work including essays, presentations, case studies, professional development and practical activities depending on the nature of the course. All grades count towards your module mark. More details will be included in the student handbook and module guides. You will always receive detailed feedback outlining your strengths and how you can improve. We aim to provide feedback on assessments within 15 working days, although you will receive immediate feedback following many of our face-to-face assessments.
