Learning analytics, in general, refers to the collection and analyses of data about learners and their environments for the purpose of understanding and improving learning outcomes. This is important to higher education, as it relates to learners' academic success and the design of personalized learning environments. In this online College Certificate program, students explore the collection, measurement and analysis of online learner data that informs decision-makers regarding learners' experience and overall academic performance. Students focus specifically on how learning analytics can help improve online learner retention and success, identify at-risk learner populations and design curriculum for adaptive learning environments. Students also examine access and privacy issues as they relate to policies governing student data collection and learning analytics research.

COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

EDU2102 Learning Analytics

Learning analytics captures, analyses and reports on data related to learners and their learning contexts. In higher education, this allows for the optimization of learning and learning environments. Using a hands-on approach, students develop a thorough understanding of the field of learning analytics, from analytics methodologies and tools to the limitations imposed by technology, costs and privacy concerns. Through a combination of online material and simulations, students identify which metrics best measure learner behaviour, curriculum design and how to use each one to gain insights into learners' experience.

EDU2103 Learning Analytics Techniques

Turning learner data into business intelligence insights is critical for optimizing learner academic success and learning experiences. Students develop analysis techniques to identify learner experience shortfalls with the goal of recommending practical solutions for improvement. Through hands-on exercises, students analyze learner data from data analysis platforms.

EDU2104 Managing Learning Analytics

The success of a learning analytics program depends on the analyst's ability to align measurement efforts to institutional objectives and effectively communicate analytics intelligence across various levels of an educational institution. Students create key performance indicators that align learning analytics to business objectives, as well as integrate learning analytics within institutional decision-making processes.

Graduates may seek employment in educational/training settings, including K-12 administration, continuing education/adult education, community colleges, academic departments in colleges or universities, instructional design, corporate training and consulting engaged in the implementation and management of learning analytics programs.

  2. Recommend learning analytics implementations that produce accurate and meaningful data using knowledge of technical and cost issues and privacy regulations.

  4. Draw insights and recommend key performance indicators based on learning analytics data that strategically align learning analytics to institutional goals and enable an analytics-driven culture across an institution.
  5. Communicate learning analytics outcomes and evaluation findings to key stakeholders.

Graduation Fee
Once you have completed all the courses in the program, it is the responsibility of the student to complete a credential application (https://www.algonquincollege.com/online/certificationgraduating/). A graduation fee is charged when the application is submitted. After your credential application has been approved, you will be invited to Convocation.

Admissions Requirements

All applicants must satisfy both College Eligibility and Program Eligibility requirements.

College Eligibility

The following requirements are recommended to ensure success in the program:

  • Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent; OR
  • Academic and Career Entrance (ACE) certificate; OR
  • General Educational Development (GED) certificate; OR
  • Mature Student status (19 years of age or older and without a high school diploma at the start of the program).

Program Eligibility

The following requirement is recommended to ensure success in the program:

  • English, Grade 12 (ENG4C or equivalent).
  • It is recommended applicants with international transcripts have the following IELTS or TOEFL scores to ensure success: IELTS-International English Language Testing Service (Academic) Overall band of 6.0 with a minimum of 5.5 in each band; OR TOEFL-Internet-based (iBT) Overall 80, with a minimum of 20 in each component: Reading 20; Listening 20; Speaking 20; Writing 20; OR Duolingo English Test (DET) Overall 105, minimums of 105 in Literacy and 85 in Production.

Please note that AC Online programs do not qualify international students for new study permits or study permit extensions.

PRIOR LEARNING AND RECOGNITION (PLAR):
Students who wish to apply for PLAR need to demonstrate competency at a post-secondary level in all of the course learning requirements. Evidence of learning achievements for PLAR candidates may include a comprehensive challenge examination and/or completion of a portfolio.

ACADEMIC PLANNER
The Academic Planner provides registered part-time students the ability to declare into a program of study. The Academic Planner outlines successfully completed courses to date, as well as courses that need to be completed in order to meet graduation requirements. It is therefore, essential that all part-time students declare to their program of study, allowing administrators to plan course offerings. The tool is available on ACSIS, located under 'Part-time Studies' on the left-hand toolbar.

PROGRAM PROGRESSION:
As per policy AA39:
Program Progression and Graduation Requirements when students are admitted to a program, they are assigned to the Program of Study that aligns with their start date. If a student takes a break for two or more consecutive terms the Program of Study is reset to align with the current version (when studies are resumed).
