With its roots going back over 100 years, the University of Sunderland has a long and well established reputation as provider of quality higher education and offers courses to over 20,000 students at Undergraduate, Postgraduate and PhD level across four faculties: Applied Sciences; Education & Society; Business & Law and Arts, Design & Media. We are an innovative, forward-thinking university with high standards of teaching, research and support. We have strong links with industry and business, and work closely with some of the world's leading companies.


We were voted by students as the Best University in the North East 2015, 15th Best in the UK and shortlisted for University of the Year 2012 by the Times Higher Education guide. Our international student community is made up of students from over 100 countries and we have a long history of welcoming and supporting students from all around the globe.

Areas of Expertise

Benefiting from a multimillion pound refurbishment programme in recent years, the University is home to world-class, modern equipment and outstanding levels of teaching and student support. Many of our courses have won individual awards and ten academic areas are classified as having ‘world leading’ and ‘internationally excellent’ research. These are: Pharmacy, Engineering, Business, Education, Social Work, Sports and Exercise Sciences, Leisure and Tourism, English, History and Art, Design & Media.

On Campus Housing

All students who choose us as their first choice university will be able to live in our accommodation for at least the 1st year of their studies. This can be arranged online, prior to arrival.

Off Campus Housing

There are various accommodation options in and around Sunderland and the university operates a landlord accreditation scheme.

With over 40 clubs available, from Aikido to Ultimate Frisbee, and everything in-between, you will never have a better chance to try something new and make some friends for life in the process.

Activities

Sunderland is an energetic city that knows how to have a good time. The recently redeveloped town centre has a vast number of bars, pubs and clubs to enjoy. Sunderland has a growing reputation as a cultural hub and has played host to some of the biggest musical and theatrical acts in recent years. There’re tons of things to do as well, with a host of activities on offer for students.

Clubs

With more than 50 clubs and societies that organise regular events, trips and socials, here’s your chance to have fun and grow your CV. From climbing Mount Kilimanjaro to Pole Dancing, Debating or Water Polo, Clubs and Societies has something for everyone...and, if there’s nothing that takes your fancy, you can set up your own society.

International Involvement

The University of Sunderland is a very well-respected UK university which combines academic excellence with fantastic student support and pastoral care. We've been providing higher education for over 100 years, and we're proud to be an innovative, accessible and inspirational university. Approximately 17 per cent of our students come from countries outside of the UK, and each year we welcome students from over 100 countries.
