Simon Fraser University (SFU) is a Canadian public research university in British Columbia with its main campus on Burnaby Mountain in Burnaby, and satellite campuses in Vancouver and Surrey. The 1.7 km2 (0.66 sq mi) main campus in Burnaby, located 20 km (12 mi) from downtown Vancouver, was established in 1965 and has more than 34,000 students and 950 faculty members. SFU offers more than 100 different programs within the Faculties of Arts & Social Sciences, Applied Science, Communications, Art & Technology, Business, Education, Environment, Science, and Health Science. SFU has also consistently been rated as Canada's best comprehensive university in the annual rankings of Canadian universities in Maclean's magazine.

Areas of Expertise

SFU is known for its innovative programs, cooperative education work programs, world-class athletics and excellent faculty. SFU's faculty bring in millions in research funding each year, allowing students to engage in vital, cutting-edge research, and ensuring that students have access to high quality equipment and facilities. In August of 2012, SFU was also approved as the first non-U.S. member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), the world's largest sports organization.

Incoming Students

Our 'New Undergraduates' student manual can help all students get started at SFU. We also offer an SFU 101 program for all incoming students, blueprints/course planning sessions, campus-wide welcome days and specific orientations for residences and International students.

Career Planning

We can assist with career exploration and decision-making, researching careers and employers, and work search strategies through workshops, individual consultations, career-related events, On-line Job Postings and outreach activities.

Sports

Perched on top of Burnaby Mountain, SFU is the perfect location for the fitness enthusiast. Hiking and cycling trails circle down the mountainside and SFU's recreation facilities provide students with access to the fitness centre, drop-in swimming, drop-in sports, intramural leagues, an outdoor track, squash courts, racquetball courts, tennis courts, and table tennis. There are also a variety of organized sport clubs with different competition levels on top of instructional programs such as aquatics, dance, fitness, martial arts, personal training and fitness classes.

Clubs

Student Sport Clubs are voluntary registered student organizations established by students who are motivated by a common interest to participate in a specific sport or physical activity. The different Student Sport Clubs may emphasize different values such as league or tournament play, socialization, instruction and skill development or a combination of the four. However, all clubs will provide an educational experience through the process of management and organization for the students involved.

Information Technology

IT Services provides electronic mail services, web services, learning technologies, research services and IT infrastructure support to the SFU community. Web publishing space and general file storage space are provided to all students, faculty and staff.

Special Services

SFU's Indigenous Student Centre provides information, help, and financial awards and services for first nations students. The Centre for Students with Disabilities provides disability related information, support and counselling to the SFU community and campus visitors

International Involvement

SFU offers students the chance to travel abroad by offering field schools and exchange programs. SFU has over 100 partner institution in over 40 different countries around the world including Argentina, Brazil, Hungary, Japan and Switzerland. SFU also supports incoming international students with work study, visas and mentorship programs through the International Services for Students office
