The Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry is dedicated to the improvement of health through excellence and leadership in medical and dental education, research and health care.

Their mission is to prepare physicians and dentists to provide the highest quality of health care to the people of Alberta and beyond, and to advance knowledge and skills through fundamental, clinical, and applied research. The Faculty has a social contract with the people of Alberta to strive to fulfill their mission in education, research, and service.

Incoming Students

U of A's Orientation program provides new students with a chance to meet others and familiarize themselves with the campus. It is held the two days prior to the start of classes and in conjunction with Week of Welcome, which offers a carnival of events and activities to welcome students back to school. Some of the activities taking place during the Week of Welcome include concerts, the sleeping bag drive-in, club fairs, varsity athletics, and much more.

Career Planning

The Department of Postgraduate Medical Education works in conjunction with the Canadian Resident Matching Service to connect graduates with training.

Sports

The University of Alberta participates in competitive athletics and is home to the highly successful varsity Golden Bears (men’s) and Pandas (women's). Football, soccer, field hockey, and cross county and track are just some of the many sports in which U of A is active.

Activities

Campus fitness and lifestyle classes, along with spring and summer recreation programs are offered.

Information Technology

A high-speed fibre-optic network connects most campus buildings and departments. Wireless network availability also exists in some buildings. The University provides over 38,000 Internet accounts to students, faculty, and staff members, including a growing number of SLIP/PPP accounts that provide high-quality access to the World Wide Web.

Cultural

The campus has several small museums, an art gallery, concert halls, theatres, regular live performances, and a campus radio station. U of A has a comprehensive campus recreation program, which delivers recreational and intramural sports, fitness classes, and non-credit instruction to the university community. Student clubs, student run events, and on campus entertainment programming contribute greatly to campus life.

Special Services

Student Services includes: Academic Support Centre, Career and Placement Services, International Centre, Native Student Services, Orientation Services, Safewalk, Sexual Assault Centre, Specialized Support and Disability Services, Student Counseling Services, Student Financial Aid and Information Centre, Student Newspaper, Students' Union, and University Health Centre.

International Involvement

University of Alberta students experience the world with international exchanges to 133 countries outside Canada. Some faculties also provide combined study and work abroad placements. The University conducts several of its regular field studies courses abroad. An International Centre exists that provides extensive information and support for students considering study, work, volunteer, and educational travel abroad.

Other

Transit: The Light Rail Transit (LRT) system connects the campus with downtown and north Edmonton. Many bus routes also serve the campus, making access to all parts of Edmonton quick and easy.
