DescriptionOur Structural Engineering with Architecture programme combines a focus on structural engineering with an appreciation of the architectural context. The programme is taught jointly with the Edinburgh School of Architecture & Landscape Architecture (ESALA), part of Edinburgh College of Art. Students spend approximately half their time taking Architecture classes in the first year. The architecture component continues in later years but the time spent in these classes is reduced as the focus shifts to core structural engineering courses. This programme builds on many of the fundamental concepts of civil and environmental engineering including the application of scientific knowledge and modern engineering tools to the analysis, design, construction and maintenance of all major forms of infrastructure. The discipline of Civil Engineering is very wide ranging, impacting on our daily lives in diverse ways. Ultimately it aims to ensure a sustainable local and global society, particularly in light of current challenges such as global climate change.

The Structural Engineering and Architecture programme complements expertise at Edinburgh in the traditional areas of transport, tunnels, bridges, and buildings and extends into emerging areas such as water security, mitigating the environmental impacts of large construction, construction management, advanced geotechnical investigations, novel structural materials, and disaster analysis and prevention. It also benefits from our industrial mentoring scheme that allows students to meet and interact with graduates working in industry and a close-knit, supportive community within which to develop your engineering skills.
