DescriptionRecreation Therapy Assistants use their skills to facilitate and implement recreation activities that enable participation and help improve aspects of an individual's physical, social, emotional, spiritual and cognitive health. In this career, you assist in the assessment process as well as plan and deliver recreation therapy programs. You evaluate recreational programs and document the benefits and outcomes of individuals participating in these activities. Learning through various theories and practice models, you also gain an understanding for how various health circumstances can impact one's ability to participate in recreation and learn to work with individuals to help them overcome barriers they have experienced.

During the 2-year program, you have opportunities to connect with professionals working in the field and immerse yourself in the therapeutic recreation community. You also have opportunities to attend local conferences with national and international presenters within the field. This program provides structured volunteer and service learning experiences in addition to your work placement. Together these placements provide you with over 500 hours of practical experience.
