DescriptionThe Department of Mathematics and Statistics has offered graduate programs since 1964 and has been active in the M.Sc. in computational science since the program's inception. Graduate students in mathematics and statistics are encouraged to participate in regular departmental colloquia, which are supplemented by an international speakers series. Recent guest speakers include K. Burrage (University of Queensland), H. Chick (University of Tasmania), P. Hilton (SUNY at Binghampton), S. Ruan (Dalhousie University) and R. D. Russell (SFU). In 1999 the department was host to the Canadian Mathematical Society (CMA) Summer Meeting, the AARMS Workshop in Combinatorics and the APICS Meeting in Mathematics.

The MAS is a highly structured program incorporating six graduate courses and practicum (an applied statistics project). A full-time student with an honours degree in statistics normally requires four to five semesters to complete the degree requirements.
