Description | The Italian program at UTM is designed to provide a comprehensive study of the many facets of Italy, a country whose culture continues to be a significant force in the shaping of Western civilization. Literature and cinema courses are organized around major figures, movements, or genres, as well as Italian life and civilization. Language is studied from all points of view--practical, stylistic, philological and historical--at all levels of instruction. In Canada, the strong presence of large Italian communities provides a social, intellectual, and practical incentive for the study of Italian.
Students are free to design for themselves the program of study best suited to their interests and needs, and they can choose from available courses at U of T Mississauga and at the St. George campus. There are conditions, however, which must be satisfied (a) for specialization in Italian alone or in Language Teaching and Learning; (b) for a major in Italian alone or Italian and French; (c) for a major in Language Teaching and Learning in Italian alone or Italian and French; (d) for a minor in Italian alone or in Cinema Studies; (e) for a specialist in International Affairs, which requires a language component.
