DescriptionThe department of German and Russian granted its first advanced degree in German language and literature in 1971. Thesis supervision is available in a significant range of 18th-, 19th- and 20th-century subjects.

The department recognizes that interest in pursuing advanced studies in German may be stimulated by a wide variety of personal and professional experiences. It welcomes, therefore, students with diverse backgrounds and a wide range of goals. The cultural and linguistic knowledge acquired in German studies at the graduate level prepares students for employment, further study or both. Those students interested in careers in teaching are encouraged to participate in Memorial's Graduate Program in Teaching.

The degrees of Master of Arts and Master of Philosophy are offered in German Language and Literature and may be taken by full-time or part-time study. No graduate work is offered in Russian at this time.
