DescriptionThis program is divided into three successive stages of instruction. Topics covered during the course include: anatomy, microbiology, embryology, pathology, pharmacology, dental specialties, professional conduct and communication, nutrition, dental office procedures, basic dental assisting skills, basic clinical support procedures, laboratory procedures, and intra-oral procedures.

The student can expect extensive, hands-on instruction with frequent quizzes, tests, mid-term and final examinations. The passing average for all instruction is 75%. Practical demonstration of competency in operatory procedures is undertaken in the clinical laboratory under the direction and evaluation of on-site instructors. Each student must successfully complete a three-week dental office practicum in both the second and third stages of the program.

Guest lecturers often include representatives of the Saint John and New Brunswick Dental Assistants Association; the New Brunswick Community College; Human Resources Development Canada and others.
