DescriptionFor those who wish to teach music in the public schools, this is the appropriate major. It is jointly administered by the School of Music and the Faculty of Education. In order to teach in the public schools of British Columbia, one must complete both the four-year bachelor's degree and a fifth "certification" or "professional" year in a Faculty of Education. Students who complete the Bachelor of Music with a major in Music Education are guaranteed acceptance to the professional year at UVic. This major, more than any other, offers excellent prospects for a career for its graduates; in fact, of the approximately 200 students who have completed both the B. Mus. and the professional year, all those who have sought employment in the public schools have been successful.

The Music Education major is offered with two options: Secondary (Instrumental) and Secondary (Choral). Students following the Instrumental option can expect to be music specialists: that is, most will not be required to teach subjects other than music; they will be high school band directors and will teach related subjects. The Choral option does provide for a second teaching area, since choral programs are less numerous in the B.C. Schools. The major in Music Education Elementary is no longer offered.
