DescriptionThe Department of Hispanic and Italian Studies considers the study of Spanish and Italian to be essential components in the acquisition of a liberal arts education. The mission of the Department is to lay a linguistic foundation and promote the knowledge of the literature and cultures of Spanish, Latin American and Italian societies, to which many North Americans have strong historic ties.

Students wishing to take courses in Italian Studies at the Third and Fourth Year levels are reminded that they must have the prerequisites of the first two years including 250A, 250B. Exceptions may be made under certain circumstances after consultation with the Department. Students specializing in Italian Studies will find that they have sufficient electives to enable them to concentrate in a second field. For example, Spanish or another language, Greek and Roman Studies, English, History, Linguistics. Students completing first year and choosing Italian Studies as a Major may be interested in exploring the Arts and Writing Cooperative Education Program.
