The University of Bristol is a thriving centre for the study of modern languages and cultures, with a vibrant learning environment and state-of-the-art multimedia centre. This Joint Honours degree enables you to explore two of the oldest cultures in Europe, as well as opening a gateway to exploring societies worldwide. French is spoken by hundreds of millions of people around the world, and Francophone countries offer diverse and stimulating cultures for study. Portuguese is the seventh most widely spoken language in the world, and with the rise of the Brazilian and Angolan economies, and recent major sporting events in Brazil, Portuguese speakers are increasingly in demand.
You will achieve a high degree of fluency and accuracy in written and oral registers in both French and Portuguese, and study the history, literature and culture of countries where they are spoken. Many students find that studying two languages makes them stronger linguists. In language classes, you will develop speaking, listening, reading, writing and translation skills using a range of textbooks, media and internet resources. You will spend half of your third year in a French-speaking country and the other half in a Portuguese-speaking country, undertaking study or work placements.
