Description:

This course immerses you in groundbreaking research and gives you the opportunity to contribute to work which could have a significant impact on future generations. It offers a breadth of topics, allowing you to choose your specialism whilst developing your knowledge and research skills.

In your first two years you will supplement your study of biochemistry with units relevant to molecular biology and biotechnology. Recent options include Fundamentals of Molecular Microbiology, Disease and Defence, and Infection and Immunity. Your third year introduces specialist, cutting-edge aspects of biochemistry such as synthetic biology, DNA-protein interactions and protein science in therapy and technology. In your fourth year you will carry out an extended, individual laboratory research project of up to 16 weeks under the supervision of a research group leader. You will also study synthetic biology alongside a choice of either Cell Biology of Development and Disease or Protein Assemblies and Molecular Machines.

Applicants from Ontario require a Grade 12 Secondary School Diploma (advanced level) with an average of between 80% and 90%. This must include six Grade 12 U, U/C or M courses, including Chemistry and another core science/mathematics subject. Core science/mathematics subjects include Physics, Biology, Human Biology, Mathematics and Further Mathematics.
