We teach Japanese intensively, from scratch. You will study the phonetic scripts (kana) from the outset, picking up the 2000 Sino-Japanese characters (kanji) over the course of your degree. Other modules cover contemporary Japanese society, literature, politics, economics, gender, modern history, business management and international relations. |

Applicants are required to have an average of 75% in six grade 12 U, U/C or M courses, typically including a modern foreign language +B The Extended Project should be in a relevant subject. Other requirements: If you are not studying a modern foreign language, the department will consider other evidence of aptitude for language learning (such as a languages GCSE or, for non-native speakers of English, an English language qualification). No prior knowledge of Japanese required (up to A Level Japanese acceptable).
