Description:

Our flagship MChem degree prepares you for a chemistry research career in academia or industry. You'll get lots of practical experience. By your final year, you'll be prepared for the extended project, where you'll work in a professional research lab on a project at the cutting edge of science. Of course, you'll also develop skills that employers in diverse fields are looking for, such as numeracy, critical thinking, teamwork and organisational skills. We'll give you a laboratory resource pack - which includes a lab coat, safety glasses and safety gloves - so that you can do practical work right from the start of your degree.

In year one, there are chemistry lectures, lab classes, and maths classes. For the maths classes, we take into consideration your highest maths qualification to ensure teaching is at the right level for you. The first year gives you the flexibility to study modules from subjects across the University. Popular choices include: Physical Principles for Chemistry (compulsory for students who don't have an A Level in physics), Chemistry in the World Around Us, and The Origin Of the Solar System. After the first year, all of your time is devoted to chemistry. You'll do more practical work as the course progresses, including a month-long group research project in your third year. By then, you'll be able to handle sensitive chemicals and conduct experiments over multiple days. In the fourth year, lectures cover a broad range of topics at the forefront of chemistry research, ranging from catalysis and chemistry in space to polymer chemistry. You can customise your course to suit your interests and career goals - there are around 24 topics to choose from.
