Telling a story with the body requires ambition, dedication and artistry. It also takes training. This four-term professional program offers intense and focused preparation for a career in dance performance. Building upon a solid foundation of technique, training will continue to expand the dancer's repertoire with a palette of disciplines, styles and genres spanning both classical and contemporary.
Customized dance projects and other performance opportunities expose dancers to a wide range of choreographers and choreographic processes. Dancers will be expected to perform choreography with accuracy and interpretive passion, and excel in ensemble and solo performance. In the final term, coursework is focused on industry and career preparation, including an original dance showcase production experience. Each showcase is crafted based on the unique and individual cast members assigned as a company. This specialized performance opportunity prepares dancers to enter the competitive performing industry with skill, confidence and a professional work ethic. |

| Application Notes : | If English is not your primary language, you will be required to take either, the Cambridge English Language Assessment (FCE, CAE, or CPE), the Elash 2 test, the IELTS test, or the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). All test results must be received directly from the testing service you choose. For admissions to Bachelor of Fine Arts programs, the minimum test score is: Cambridge (CEFR) - B2, ELASH 2 - 137, IELTS - 6, or TOEFL iBT - 70. The English language proficiency exam requirement is waived in situations where English was the primary language of instruction for a minimum of three years in the high school or university that will be sending official academic records to AMDA. A letter from the school must confirm that the language of instruction is English. |

Applicants must audition for admission to AMDA. Appointments are required for auditions, which are held on our campuses, throughout the United States and abroad. Schedule an audition at amda.edu/auditions.
Dance Theatre Students: Applicants will be asked to present a primary solo dance piece (60-90 seconds in length). The primary solo piece should be in one of the following styles: Ballet, Modern, Jazz, and/or Contemporary.
Applicants who wish to show an intermediate or advanced level of proficiency in Hip-hop, Tap, Ballroom or cultural dance styles may prepare a secondary solo.
Applicants may also be asked to demonstrate ballet vocabulary as part of the audition. To be fully prepared, please bring all appropriate dance shoes and attire. Applicants must provide music on an MP3 player (phones may be used, but must be placed in "do not disturb" or "airplane" mode). Speakers will be provided by AMDA.
Note: AMDA's Dance Theatre Conservatory program is an interdisciplinary program. Dance Theatre applicants are encouraged to prepare a song or monologue in addition to their dance pieces. This will also allow dance theatre applicants to be considered for admission to other AMDA programs.
We ask all Dance Theatre applicants to prepare one of the following:
- 1) one 60-90 second monologue (contemporary or classical). Monologues should be sourced from published plays.
OR
- 2) 32 bars of a song from the musical theatre or classical repertoire. Please bring sheet music in your key to your audition. AMDA will provide a professional accompanist for you.
