Description:The Master of Arts for Teachers of English (MATE) Program provides the opportunity for English teachers in the elementary, secondary or college system to pursue advanced studies in English literature. The MATE Program offers an innovative and accessible graduate degree program without compromising the quality of instruction and intellectual engagement or the rigour and breadth of scholarship of the regular MA program in English. The 2018-2020 iteration of MATE will have three courses focused on Aboriginal literatures.

Admission Requirements

Prerequisites:*

These courses are intended as guidelines. Speak to your guidance counsellor to see what courses are offered at your school.

    Applicants should have a strong BA in English or a cognate discipline with a broad range of courses in major areas of English literature. Students should normally have a high grade point average (a cumulative 3.0 GPA minimum) and strong references. Cognate disciplines include Humanities, Comparative Literature and World Literature. Students with a BA in History, Philosophy, Women's Studies, or Modern Languages will also be considered if they had an English minor or completed a range of English courses as part of their undergraduate degree.

    Test Scores:
    • Test of English as a Foreign Language (Paper Based) [min. 650] or Test of English as a Foreign Language (Internet Based) [min. 95] or Test of English as a Foreign Language (Computer Based) [min. 280] or International English Language Testing System (academic or immigration) [min. 8.5-9]

    The Department of English has certain requirements beyond the Dean of Graduate Studies regulations, namely a minimum 3.5 CGPA (cumulative grade point average) and, for international students, either a degree from an English-speaking post-secondary institution or top scores in any of the acceptable English language tests, i.e. TOEFL Paper (650+), TOEFL Computer-Based (280+), TOEFL Internet-Based (95+), or IELTS (8.5-9).
