Admission Requirements

These courses are intended as guidelines. Speak to your guidance counsellor to see what courses are offered at your school.

    All applicants must: be licensed to practice as a registered nurse (active practitioner) in a province in Canada or in a foreign country (applicants for the Nurse Practitioner option must be licensed to practice as a registered nurse in a Canadian jurisdiction when the application is submitted); have a four-year Bachelor's degree or its equivalent with a minimum "B" standing (3.0 grade point average); have completed undergraduate level classes in research, statistics, family nursing, and community nursing; and have electronic access to faculty and library resources.

    Test Scores:
    • International English Language Testing System (academic or immigration) [min. 7] or Test of English as a Foreign Language (Paper Based) [min. 600] or CanTEST [min. 4.5] or Michigan English Language Assessment Battery [min. 85] or Test of English as a Foreign Language (Computer Based) [min. 237]

    English is the language of study at Dalhousie; therefore all applicants whose first language is not English must demonstrate their capacity to pursue a graduate-level program in English before admission. Dalhousie accepts a number of different English proficiency test scores: Computer TOEFL- 237; Written TOEFL - 600; MELAB - 85; IELTS - 7; CanTest - 4.5 (with no band score lower than 4.0); or CAEL 70 with no band score lower than 60. Alternatively, a prospective student may enroll in the ESL program with the Dalhousie College of Continuing Education and obtain a grade of at least A- on the final stage of that training. The language competency test may be waived if the applicant has completed a degree at a recognized university where the language of instruction is English. The claims must be verified by the Faculty of Graduate Studies. Test scores are valid for two years from the date the test was written.
