Careers:Authors and WritersEditors

Description:

There are diverse and exciting opportunities for skilled writers across the cultural industries - from stage, screen and radio, to literature, poetry and print. To be successful, professionals need to understand how best to appeal to a range of audiences using available media. This is while being able to align these needs to a professional or creative brief. The internet has led to an exponential increase in the number of media outlets requiring skilled writers both nationally and internationally. As a result, the UK government has highlighted a shortage in professionals with specialist writing skills for this growing number of platforms.

On this course, you should develop the technical skills, critical awareness and creative daring essential for working as a writer. Learning from well-respected professional writers, you will gain a thorough understanding of the creative process, apply your writing skills to meet the needs of different media and audiences through a variety of approaches and become an independent and self-motivated manager of your own projects. The key skills of ideation, narration and editing will equip you to write for any platform and you will have the opportunity to specialise in a preferred genre. The extensive knowledge you can gain of professional standards and expectations should provide excellent preparation for working in the creative industries.
