This course offers an understanding of the world that emphasises the interaction between individuals, groups and social institutions. Students address a range of sociological questions, using theory and research methods. Topics include the development of sociology as an academic discipline and the operations of contemporary society, and how social characteristics such as gender and social class influence the ways in which people live their lives. We will consider how the relationship between national governments and their citizens is changing, and how this affects key ideas about contemporary issues that include work, education, crime and punishment. We will also address how the links between people and institutions are increasingly global and how to research behaviour, characteristics and beliefs in an effective and ethically considered manner.
