Description:

Whether new to the subject or not, this course enables you to specialise in Film Studies while also choosing units in all forms of English literature, American literature, cultural studies and creative writing. The study of film is long established at university and – like English Literature – is grounded in close-textual interpretation and the analysis of style, genre, historical context and the politics of representation.

As well as covering mainstream ‘Hollywood’ style cinema from the last 120 years, you will look at less commercial film-work from around the globe that challenges and pushes the medium to its limits. Films studied are screened in cinema-like conditions as they were made to be seen this way. Film units cover cinema history, film language and screen theory as well as more specific aspects of cinema. You divide your time between Film and English, where the curriculum covers the seventeenth century to the present with an emphasis on writing from the last two hundred years.
