Description:

The goal of the MSc Program in Business Administration is to educate and train business professionals with advanced research skills and extensive knowledge in a specialized area, e.g., accounting, finance, human resources management/organizational behaviour, marketing, operations management/international business. These individuals meet a growing need in Northern British Columbia and beyond for professional skills in establishing, expanding, and managing all types of business enterprises that have long-term sustainability and contribute to the economic growth and vitality of the North and the country at large. The students in the program come from a wide variety of backgrounds, including business, resource development, mathematics, and the social sciences. The MSc is a research-based degree with a thesis and is different from the MBA degree which is a terminal and course-based degree. The MSc in Business Administration is normally completed in two years.

    To submit your application online, you will need:

    • Unofficial copies of transcripts for all post-secondary institutions attended (unofficial transcripts). Transcripts should be submitted in the original language they were produced in, accompanied by English translations (if required). International applicants are required to upload proof of degree as well. For more information see requirements for including transcripts with your application.
    • In general, applicants to a Master’s degree program must hold a four-year baccalaureate degree (or equivalent) from a recognized institution.
    • Domestic applicants are normally required to have a minimum overall average of 3.00 (B) for third- and fourth-year courses.
    • We accept applicants from a wide variety of backgrounds and no specific degree is required. However, if you do not hold a Bachelor of Commerce or equivalent degree, you will need to demonstrate sufficient preparation in mathematics and statistics as well as demonstrating background preparation in your chosen area of MSc specialization (e.g. Accounting, Finance, etc.).
    • A statement of academic interest (programs may have specific requirements for the statement of interest, please review the program specific admission requirements below for specific program requirements).
    • Name and contact information for your references (an institutional email address is required). References should be submitted no later than 2 weeks after the published deadline for your program. Please review our guide to tracking your application to monitor receipt of your references.

    Research proposal:

    This is uploaded at the time of application, so have it ready before you start your application. Applicants are required to submit a research proposal that outlines the objectives, methods, and significance of their planned research project. While this proposal does not need to be the final research project, it serves as a basis for evaluating the research potential of the applicant, as well as the alignment of the applicant’s research interest with the program's research focus.

    A research proposal should include the following components:

    1. Introduction: This section introduces the research topic, providing background information and contextualizing the study. It clearly states the aims and objectives of the research, as well as the anticipated outcomes or contributions to knowledge.
    2. Literature review: Provide an overview of the existing literature related to the research topic. Identify gaps or limitations in the current knowledge base that the proposed study aims to address.
    3. Motivation for the topic: Emphasize the relevance and originality of the research question, highlighting how it contributes to the current state of knowledge in the field.
    4. Research methodology: This section describes the approach that will be used to investigate the research topic and answer the research question. It should include details on the experimental design, data collection methods, and data analysis techniques that will be employed.
    5. Reference section: This section should list all references cited in the proposal.
