Description:

Students train in classrooms and the automotive service shop in VCC's facility at the Broadway campus. Instruction is provided through lectures to introduce theory and demonstrations to illustrate practical application of the theory. Students then have ample opportunity in the automotive labs to apply their skills and to demonstrate their knowledge. The college supplies tools and coveralls while the apprentice is a student at VCC. Students must supply their own safety equipment. Technical training is divided into four levels, typically taken over four years. Level 1 covers shop safety, tools, suspension, brakes, steering and the fundamentals of an automobile frame. Level 2 advances the apprentice's skills in repairing a wide variety of engines. Level 3 provides the apprentice with competency in ignition, fuel and emission control systems. Level 4 completes the training with students developing skills in transmission and drive control systems.

This program is designed for the apprentice currently working in the automotive service industry. Auto technician apprentice training at VCC is designed to meet the needs of both the apprentice and industry by providing a valuable and up-to-date training experience. Upon completion, apprentices return to industry with an increased, comprehensive skill set. The e-pprentice stream allows students to take the first portion of courses online, only comping to campus for the final portion of the term.
