In particular this allows engineers to determine the effects of modern construction methods and materials on the safety of buildings and infrastructure. You will take specific courses related to Structural and Fire Safety Engineering from Year 3 of the programme onwards. The programme builds on many of the fundamental concepts of civil and environmental engineering including the application of scientific knowledge and modern engineering tools to the analysis, design, construction and maintenance of all major forms of infrastructure. The discipline is very wide ranging, impacting on our daily lives in diverse ways. Ultimately it aims to ensure a sustainable local and global society, particularly in light of current challenges such as global climate change.

This programme complements expertise at Edinburgh in the traditional areas of transport, tunnels, bridges, and buildings and extends into emerging areas such as water security, mitigating the environmental impacts of large construction, construction management, advanced geotechnical investigations, novel structural materials, and disaster analysis and prevention. It also benefits from close industrial relationships and the industrial mentoring scheme that allows students to meet and interact with recent Edinburgh graduates working in industry.

Prerequisites:

    The typical offer is likely to be:
    • SQA Highers: AAAB.
    • A Levels: AAA.
    • IB: 37 points with 555 at HL.

    Minimum entry requirements
    • SQA Highers: AABB by end of S5 or AABBB/AAAB from S4-S6, to include Mathematics at Grade A, plus either Physics or Engineering Science.
    • A Levels: ABB in one sitting, to include Mathematics, plus either Physics (preferably), Engineering or Design & Technology (excluding Food Technology).
    • IB: 32 points overall and award of IB Diploma with 555 at HL to include Mathematics and one from Physics or Design & Technology.
    Additional Admission Requirements:
      You must provide evidence that your written and spoken English is at a level that will enable you to succeed in your studies.

      If English is not your first language, you must have one of the following qualifications as evidence of your spoken and written English:
      • IELTS Academic module overall 6.5 with 5.5 in each component
      • TOEFL iBT 92 or above with 20 in each section
      • Cambridge English: Advanced & Proficiency overall 176 with 162 in each component
      • Pearson Test of English (Academic): Total 61 with at least 51 in each "Communicative Skills" section
      • Trinity ISE: ISE II with a distinction in all four components

      SQA and GCSE
      For SQA and GCSE students, unless a higher level is specified in the stated entry requirements, a pass is required in English at the following grades or higher:
      • SQA National 5 Grade C
      • SQA Standard Grade 3
      • SQA Intermediate 1 Grade A
      • SQA Intermediate 2 Grade C
      • GCSE Grade C
      • IB Standard Level Grade 4
