Description:

Understanding the functioning of the human body at the molecular, cellular, organ and system levels in health and disease is the ultimate aim of biomedical science.

Biomedical scientists integrate knowledge gained by research across a range of related disciplines and apply this knowledge in the analysis of disease mechanisms. The basic research carried out by biomedical scientists is fundamental for new developments and innovation in disease diagnosis, treatment and prevention. Biomedical scientists develop individual scientific, experimental and critical skills that have the potential to facilitate major contributions to improvements in human health and the prolonging of life.

Prerequisites:

These courses are intended as guidelines. Speak to your guidance counsellor to see what courses are offered at your school.
    The typical offer is likely to be:
    • SQA Highers: AAAB by the end of S5 or AAAA/AAABB in S4-S6.
    • A Levels: ABB in one sitting.
    • IB: 36 points overall with HL Grade 6 biology and chemistry.

    Minimum entry requirements
    • SQA Highers: ABBB by end of S5 or ABBBB/AABB from S4-S6, to include Biology and Chemistry. Mathematics and/or Physics are recommended. Qualified applicants are advised to take Biology and Chemistry at Advanced Higher level where possible. Standard Grades: Mathematics at Grade 2. English at Grade 3 (or National 5 Mathematics at Grade B and English at Grade C).
    • A Levels: ABB, in one sitting, to include Biology and Chemistry. Mathematics and/or Physics are recommended. GCSEs: Mathematics at Grade B and English at Grade C.
    • IB: Overall score of 32 points, including HL Biology and Chemistry, one at Grade 5 and one at Grade 6. Mathematics and/or Physics are recommended. SL: English at Grade 4 and Mathematics at SL Grade 4.
    Application Notes : Please apply for only one Biomedical Sciences programme. You will have the opportunity to switch between programmes in later years provided the required courses have been passed.
    Additional Admission Requirements:
      You must provide evidence that your written and spoken English is at a level that will enable you to succeed in your studies.

      If English is not your first language, you must have one of the following qualifications as evidence of your spoken and written English:
      • IELTS Academic module overall 6.5 with 5.5 in each component
      • TOEFL iBT 92 or above with 20 in each section
      • Cambridge English: Advanced & Proficiency overall 176 with 162 in each component
      • Pearson Test of English (Academic): Total 61 with at least 51 in each "Communicative Skills" section
      • Trinity ISE: ISE II with a distinction in all four components

      SQA and GCSE
      For SQA and GCSE students, unless a higher level is specified in the stated entry requirements, a pass is required in English at the following grades or higher:
      • SQA National 5 Grade C
      • SQA Standard Grade 3
      • SQA Intermediate 1 Grade A
      • SQA Intermediate 2 Grade C
      • GCSE Grade C
      • IB Standard Level Grade 4
