Description:

Over the years, the undergraduate program in the Department of Geology has developed a strong applied geology component. In part, this reflects the close relations which have evolved between the department and the Saskatchewan Geological Survey. For example, laboratory projects in the advanced sedimentary geology courses take advantage of easy access to drillcore and other material provided by the Subsurface Geological Laboratory. Data for honours student theses are commonly derived from field mapping programs of the Saskatchewan Geological Survey or from subsurface information. Laboratory projects in stratigraphy, petroleum geology and groundwater geology commonly deal with practical problems, applying techniques used by working geologists. The geochemistry course focuses on exploration techniques. The geophysics course deals mainly with applied aspects of this science, and its laboratory component involves computer-based approaches to problem solving. In the mineralogy, petrology and mineral deposits courses, strong emphasis is placed on systematic description, identification and interpretation of rocks and minerals through "hands-on" examination. Geological Survey and industry personnel tell us that one of the characteristics they most appreciate about University of Regina students is that they are "rock conscious". This consciousness applies not only to an ability to describe and identify rocks but also to recognition of structural relations in hand specimen and outcrops.
