Program Information

School:University of Victoria
Field of Study:Geology/Earth Science, General
Oceanography, Chemical and Physical
Description:Global climate change, earthquake hazard, natural resource planning, greenhouse gas/ozone-level monitoring, marine pollution, and groundwater contamination are phrases you find daily in the newspaper, and represent but a few of the fields in which earth and ocean scientists make a contribution. The School of Earth and Ocean Sciences (SEOS) at the University of Victoria was the first in Canada to combine the disciplines of earth and ocean sciences in one program and to focus on earth system science. Earth system science seeks to understand the earth's present and past processes and interactions on a global scale through the integrated study of the solid earth, oceans and atmosphere. These studies encompass global change caused by both natural processes and human activity.

Geography is an integrative, environmental discipline with one foot in the physical sciences and the other in the social sciences, while also drawing on relevant material from the humanities. There is a balance of social science and physical geography within the department. A basic aim is to offer a balanced program within the discipline, as well as several areas of specialization. First and second year courses are intended to provide a broad background in geography that may constitute a foundation for specialization in third and fourth years, or simply an introduction to a balanced upper year program that does not emphasize a particular field. This program combines courses from both Geography and Earth and Ocean Sciences.
