Description:

Program focuses on French literatures and the evolution of ideas and literary fields as well as research training in French linguistics. This unique interdisciplinary program features a double specialization in French Literature and French Linguistics and offers courses in French only on both campuses of York University.

You will have the opportunity to research and study French literature and the language of France, French Canada and French communities across the world (for instance Professor Szmidt’s research on North African literature and Professor R. Mougeon’s research on Canadian French and immersion French). Students are actively involved in research: as graduate or research assistants assigned to professors; for students in Linguistics, as members of the Centre for Research on Language Contact, located at Glendon; and as organizers and participants in student colloquia showcasing their research. Entrance in the program requires high competence in French for non-native French-speaking students.

Prerequisites:

Test Scores:
  • Test of English as a Foreign Language (Paper Based) [min. 600] or International English Language Testing System (academic or immigration) [min. 7.5] or Canadian Academic English Language Assessment [min. 70] or Test of English as a Foreign Language (Internet Based) [min. 100] or Michigan English Language Assessment Battery [min. 85c]
Additional Admission Requirements:

All students must have a specialized Baccalaureate, with a minimum general average of B. Their knowledge of oral and written French must be almost native and they must also be proficient in English.

Students who hold a Baccalaureate degree in French and whose course of study corresponds essentially to the courses offered in French Departments of Studies in Canada may be admitted directly into the program.

Applicants with a Bachelor's degree in a field other than French must take a number of courses as part of a preparatory program. A minimum average of B is required for admission to the master's program.
