Description:

Can you imagine being a captain of a cargo ship crossing the oceans of the world or a first officer on a ferry responsible for the safe passage of travelers? Our program prepares you for a career as a ship's deck officer in the commercial marine industry. You'll be trained in areas such as watchkeeping practices, seamanship, safety, and communications.

The Marine Navigation Technology program provides the academic and applied skills necessary for an entry-level deck officer trained to International Maritime Organization standards. Pending program approval from Transport Canada, students who complete the academic courses and obtain the required sea-time internship will be prepared to challenge Transport Canada examinations and apply for certification as a watchkeeping mate.

Prerequisites:

These courses are intended as guidelines. Speak to your guidance counsellor to see what courses are offered at your school.
Marine Navigation Technology Diploma or a Transport Canada Watchkeeping Mate Certificate with six months of service as an Officer of Watch.
    Additional Admission Requirements:
A valid Marine Medical Certificate (to meet Transport Canada's requirements for approved marine/cadet training programs), is required for the program. Details are provided with your acceptance notification.
