Description:

The goal of the PhD (Nursing) program at the University of Alberta (U of A) is to educate for excellence in the development, organization, and testing of nursing knowledge. Rigour, flexibility, and relevance characterize the program: rigor in the level of scholarship; flexibility in the numbers and types of courses required; and relevance both to the discipline of nursing and to the student's goals and interests. Within the PhD program, students are required to develop knowledge in three areas: the discipline of nursing, research methodology, and a substantive subject area of the student's choice. Four areas of concentration are considered fundamental in order to gain a command of the discipline of nursing--nursing theory, nursing research, nursing practice, and nursing history. Each student's program will be individually planned in relation to her/his learning needs in these four areas, dissertation interests, and career goals.
