Description:

Irish Studies is an interdisciplinary degree programme that examines the variety and diversity of Irish identities and asks a series of provocative and stimulating questions about ideas of Ireland and Irishness. Over the course of their degree, students will have a broad range of options in subjects such as Archaeology, History, Geography, Sociology, History of Art, Drama, Film, Literature, Folklore, Irish, Politics and Music. Students will have the opportunity to explore the rich variety of cultural heritages and traditions, the complex and fascinating processes of historical change, the nature of contemporary cultural and social change, and the ways in which environment, landscape and people have interacted over the centuries.

How can we understand the ways in which place, history, culture and society have shaped contemporary Ireland? How meaningful is national identity in an age of globalisation? What are the social and cultural opportunities provided by the shift from emigration to immigration? A wealth of different perspectives on these topics will be provided, including the international context for an understanding of Ireland and Irishness. This is a subject where students can develop their own interests within a coherent and supportive framework. A variety of different pathways will be available, with a strong emphasis on empowering individual learning and the development of research, communication and writing skills.
