| Environmental Toxicology is a new and rapidly developing field concerned with the harmful effects of chemical, physical and biological agents on living organisms, including fish, plants, animals and humans. The Environmental Toxicologist draws on a variety of scientific disciplines to describe, measure, explain and predict the severity and frequency of adverse effects on living organisms due to environmental toxicant exposure. Environmental Toxicology uses a variety of techniques to study the impact of toxic agents on living organisms and provides powerful tools for assessing the risks associated with the presence of these agents. A Co-op option is available to MET students in which students complete two semesters of Co-op during their studies. Please note that suitable Co-op placements cannot be guaranteed. |

Candidates enrolling in the MET program must meet all requirements for admission to graduate studies at SFU and have an adequate background in the sciences, with a good basic knowledge of chemistry and biological or biomedical sciences at both the macro and micro levels. In general, the specific admission requirements include at least one semester of organic chemistry (equivalent of SFU course CHEM 282-2 Organic Chemistry II), one semester of molecular/cell biology (equivalent of SFU course MBB 231-3 Cellular Biology and Biochemistry) and one semester of a toxicology/environmental science course (equivalent of SFU course BISC 313-3 Environmental Toxicology).
You must get verbal approval to participate in Co-op from your academic supervisor. You must complete your workterm(s) before defending and graduating. You must also be available for 8 month placements. Most REM & MET employers prefer the graduate students to stay on for two semester due to the advanced nature of the work, increased level of responsiblity, and amount of guidance and training provided by the employer. |
